Following the announcement, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV stepped onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and looked out at a world brimming with anxiety, division, and unrest. He said little, but what he did say, he said with intention. In his brief address, the word peace echoed no fewer than five times. Not as a rhetorical flourish, but as the anchor of his vision. “Peace be with you,” he began, and then again, “May peace fill our hearts, our Church, and our wounded world.” It was a message that rang clear: his pontificate would be rooted in the pursuit and proclamation of peace.

Since then, all his speeches and homilies have consistently centered on peace, as a mission, not a slogan. Following Pope John Paul II (Hope), Pope Benedict XVI (Faith), and Pope Francis (Mercy), he stands as the Pope of Peace. His calm demeanor, gentle tone, and steady presence quietly radiate the very peace he preaches. In a restless world, Pope Leo XIV offers not just words, but a living witness of peace.

There is a profound mystery in the life of a tree, something often lost to the common eye or mind. A tree's growth is not just upward, striving toward light and warmth, bearing leaves and fruits that we enjoy; it also grows downward, in the opposite direction, into hidden depths, toward the darkness of the earth’s core. This downward journey is one of struggle, as roots push through the dense soil, defying resistance, anchoring themselves in obscurity. Yet, it is this unseen growth that allows the tree to stand firm, to reach toward heaven and yield its blessings. Without its roots, hidden from sight, the tree above cannot thrive or endure.

In many ways, we are not unlike the tree. Our lives, too, have seasons of hiddenness, times of inner battles and silence, where we feel unseen, buried under the weight of trials and obscure struggles. Yet, just as the tree is strengthened in its unseen roots, we are quietly transformed and deepened by these hidden seasons. It is precisely in these unseen moments that we develop the fortitude needed to rise in response to Christ’s call to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. From these hidden depths, we find the grace to radiate His presence more profoundly.

May we, then, find hope in our hidden struggles, recognizing that these are the roots that fortify us. As St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthians: "For when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Cor. 12:10). It is in our weakness that we are made strong, for it is here, in the unseen soil of our trials, that God’s grace grows within us, making us blossom and radiant.

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, and your values become your destiny."

"I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise Your Name and the upright will live before You."
