Work alongside outstanding international researchers in one of Germany’s most beautiful cities: The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) invites historians, economists, political scientists and scholars of cognate disciplines to apply as a 2027 guest researcher. You will work on projects that align with the Institute's focus and collaborate closely with IOS members.

What we offer:

• A stipend to support your stay of up to four weeks.

• Close cooperation with our three research departments (History, Economics, Politics) and exchange with specialized institutions at the Universität Regensburg.

• Full access to our extensive library holding over 360,000 media items of literature in humanities and social sciences relating to Eastern and Southeastern Europe + a variety of electronic research services and repositories.

🎓 The KonKoop Research Network invites early career scholars to join its free Early Career Lab (ECL). This initiative is an academic incubator that provides various opportunities for the professional development such as research support and professional skills training, access to advice and support from the wider KonKoop network, mutual knowledge transfer and so on.

🔍 The network investigates conflict and cooperation dynamics and spatial configurations in Eastern Europe, Southeast Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. This call is especially relevant for researchers based at German institutions or those with a biographical background in the target regions who study themes such as peace and conflict, borders, war and trauma, or nationalism.

Call for Expressions of Interest: KonKoop Early Career Lab The KonKoop Research Network invites early-career researchers to participate in the "Early Career Lab", coordinated by the IOS. Application deadline: September 10, 2026.

Three decades after the Balkan wars, Europe is witnessing a devastating armed conflict in Ukraine. Drawing on his recent academic visit to Lviv, Ukraine, the social anthropologist with an extensive fieldwork experience in Kosovo (1986-1992) and Bosnia (1997-2002) Prof. Dr. Ger Duijzings (Universität Regensburg , Seeffield) shares his observations on the war documentation and memory, the role of emotions, and the work of researchers investigating atrocities in Ukraine.

On 5 August, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Great Terror -- the wave of mass Stalinist arrests, deportations, and executions in 1937–1938. On this occasion, we would like to highlight the article in our by our visiting fellow Galyna Starodubets “Volhynian Germans under the Pressure of Stalinist Terror: Profile Characteristics of the Victims and their Perpetrators.”

In her research, Prof. Starodubets reconstructs the profiles of those involved in the Stalinist terror -- both its victims and its perpetrators -- drawing on archival documents related to the repression of individuals accused of belonging to the so-called "German Fascist Military Insurrectionary Organization."

Seit Beginn der russischen Vollinvasion in der Ukraine 2022 ist über eine Million Menschen aus der Ukraine nach Deutschland geflohen. Dies hat Auswirkungen in vielen Kommunen und Städten. Historisch gesehen gab es jedoch im 20. Jahrhundert mehrere ukrainische Fluchtbewegungen nach Deutschland. Wiederholt sich also jetzt die Geschichte? Und welche Bedeutung hat Bayern für die aus der Ukraine Geflohenen?

In July 2026, we were pleased to welcome seven Ukrainian scholars in Regensburg as part of our fellowship program!

Our visiting researchers contribute their expertise to our center through long-term, short-term, or sur-place fellowships. While long-term and short-term fellows conduct research in Regensburg, the sur-place fellowships help sustain and strengthen the country's academic landscape amid Russia’s war of aggression.

🖼️In der digitalen Ausstellung „Archiv des leisen Verlustes“ auf unserer Webseite setzt sich der renommierte ukrainische Künstler Mykola Dmitrukh mit der Kirchenarchitektur der deutschen Kolonisten aus dem 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert in der Südukraine auseinander. Acht Ölgemälde zeigen Kirchen in den Regionen Mykolajiw, Odessa und Cherson, die durch den Krieg Russlands gegen die Ukraine und wiederholte Raketenangriffe gefährdet sind.

🎨Die von der Historikerin Prof. Dr. Katrin Boeckh (IOS Regensburg) kuratierte Online-Ausstellung dokumentiert diesen schleichenden Verlust und erzählt zugleich ein wenig bekanntes Kapitel der deutsch-ukrainischen Geschichte.
