It's lantern season again and for me that means eyeing all the empty cartons and boxes in the bin

At this point if all these things had legs, they'd have run away from a long time ago

So far I've turned milk cartons, paper plates and plastic bottles into lanterns and I’m looking forward to seeing what other ridiculous things I can turn into one depending on where my creativity takes me

That said, I’m still very much team buy the lantern if you want because sometimes that’s simply the easier way to go

Being a mum in Germany means looking at an empty plastic bottle and thinking, “That could be a lantern

Because when your kids attend a German kindergarten, you realize that St. Martin’s lantern season is a whole thing!

So, instead of throwing this bottle away, I turned it into a little lantern.

Last year it was paper plates, this year it's an empty plastic bottle

Materials:
-Empty plastic bottle
-Tissue paper
-Coloured paper
-Glue
-Pipe cleaners

Add a battery-operated LED light, and you're good to go

One of the ways I've limited being the entertainment for my kids all afternoon, and made our afternoons a little lighter, was to create an after-school/after-kindergarten afternoon basket

The idea is to make it easier for them to start something without needing me to start it for them

So, this week I rotated the activities in the basket, and the ones they kept going back to were:

- The Halli Galli card game
- The play scarves
- And the craft box

But creating the basket made me realize that it works because I don't have to announce the activity or explain what they're supposed to do every time

Also, I try not to stuff it with too many choices so to not overwhelm them and just put about two familiar things, one new thing and two things they haven't seen for a while, and so far, it seems to be working well
