🔎 A week dedicated to exploring the limits of Artificial Intelligence.

From 31 August to 4 September 2026, Alma Mater Europaea was proud to co-organize the international Summer School “Limits of Artificial Intelligence” in Munich.

🤝 Together with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Chair of Philosophy and Theory of Science, TUM Institute for Advanced Study, Deutsches Museum, Hochschule für Philosophie München and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Summer School brought together experts and students from different institutions and disciplines to explore the theoretical, technical, ethical, legal and societal limits of AI.

🎓 Among the participants was Johannes Höllerlich, a PhD student of our joint doctoral program in collaboration with the University of Bamberg, pictured here with Klaus Mainzer, President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

💡 Lectures, discussions and visits provided an inspiring setting to address one of the defining questions of our time: What can AI do — and where are its limits?

🌟 Highlights included lectures by internationally renowned scholars, among them Michael Molls (TUM Emeritus of Excellence, former Chair of Radiation Oncology & former Director of TUM-IAS), Gordon Cheng (Professor of Cognitive Systems, TUM) and Michael Decker (Director General of the Deutsches Museum & TUM Professor).

Alma Mater Europaea – ECH is pleased to be part of the interdisciplinary conference “Leibniz und” at the TUM Science and Study Center Raitenhaslach.

💡 Organized by Stefania Centrone (TUM), the conference brings together experts from different disciplines to explore Leibniz’s ideas in relation to AI, medicine, science and innovation.

🎤 On 8 September, Anna-Vanadis Faix will speak on “Wissenschaft der Zukunft?”, followed by Werner G. Faix with “Innovationen und Exzellenz”.

We look forward to an inspiring interdisciplinary exchange.

How can innovation help address the major challenges of our time? 💡

A new scientific publication co-authored by SIBE CEO Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner G. Faix explores this very question.

In the research article “Challenge-Driven Innovation: A Systematic Review of Conditions for Leading Innovations That Overcome the Challenges of Our Time,” Louisa Leoff, Werner G. Faix, and Claus-Christian Carbon examine the concept of challenge-driven innovation.

Based on a systematic literature review, the authors identify twelve key conditions that can help organisations align innovation more effectively with societal, climate-related, and economic challenges. These include:

🔹 flexible resource allocation and decision-making autonomy
🔹 a positive failure culture
🔹 cross-organisational networking
🔹 open innovation
🔹 innovation-oriented leadership

One finding stands out in particular: leadership plays a crucial role in turning challenges into impactful innovation.

📖 New publication: “Digital Humanism, Epistemic Values, and Explanation: Toward a Critical Digital Humanism”

We are pleased to share a new article by Stefania Centrone and Anna-Vanadis Faix, published in Humana.Mente.

🤖 Digital systems can deliver efficient and accurate results. But do they also produce knowledge that people can understand, critically assess, and revise?

The authors explore this question by distinguishing between explanation as a technical output and explanation as an epistemic value. Moving beyond a narrow understanding of explainable AI, they propose a critical approach to digital humanism that evaluates digital systems not only by their predictive performance, but also by their capacity to support intelligibility, scrutiny, and meaningful human judgment.

🔎 The publication contributes to the interdisciplinary discourse at the intersection of technology, philosophy, ethics, and society.

🤖 What role could generative AI play in investment advisory?

We are pleased to share that the survey of one of our PhD researchers has been featured by MoneyToday.

The research project, conducted in collaboration with the University of Bamberg, explores how generative AI may shape the future of investment advisory, and which factors influence its acceptance among private investors.

AI offers significant potential for data-driven insights and efficiency. At the same time, trust, transparency, perceived risk, and human expertise remain central when it comes to financial decision-making.

📘 New publication

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new book chapter by researchers affiliated with Alma Mater Europaea - ECH, now published by Springer Nature.

The chapter, “Business Challenges Between Innovation and Societal Values”, explores the growing tension between rapid innovation and societal responsibility in a global business environment.

The authors Anna-Vanadis Faix, Stefanie Kisgen und Werner G. Faix discuss how approaches such as Responsible Innovation (RI) and innovation quality can help organizations integrate sustainable and socially responsible value creation into their innovation processes — particularly in the context of developing countries and global challenges.
