Opening of IPPAE photo exhibition 📸

On November, 29th the IPPAE program representatives officially opened a photo exhibition, which displays the beauty but also the everyday human concerns of the fieldwork environment of the IPPAE PhD students Evi Mariana from Indonesia and Alexander Cano from Colombia.
The exhibition started with a tour along the impactful pictures where the artists took the audience behind the scenes of their photo creation and fieldwork and shared their experiences and unique impressions from their countries of origin.

The photo exhibition should mark the beginning of a series of poster exhibitions that change every year and are showing the research work (in pictures) from current IPPAE doctoral students. The opening was a successful prelude, stimulating though processes and fruitful discussions in a relaxing atmosphere. We sadly announce the passing of our former programme director Professor Dr. Siegfried Bauer. He served as the programme head for many years and led numerous international students to successful defence of their PhD theses at Justus Liebig University Giessen.

IPPAE graduate selected as a DAAD Research Ambassdor 🙌

The IPPAE graduate Dr. Archana Raghavan Sathyan, who is now working as an Assistant Professor at the Kerala Agricultural University in India, was selected and appointed by the DAAD as a Research Ambassador for a duration of three years from 2022 to 2025 🤩

DAAD Research Ambassadors are academicians and scientists who have a long standing relationship with Germany and are interested in promoting Germany as a destination for higher learning and scientific cooperation by sharing their experience, mentoring students and colleagues. As established members of the academic/scientific community they help inspire their colleagues and students to consider Germany as a partner in their work or as a destination for study or research by answering their questions and by organising events on and off campus 🤓

Archana went through the IPPAE programme - which is funded by the DAAD - at Justus Liebig University Giessen from 2015 to 2019. She is looking forward to her new tasks as a DAAD Research Ambassdor and also expresses her gratitude to the IPPAE programme: „Thank you IPPAE for contributing immensely to my professional growth and development“ 🙏

What is better than a day full of exchange of experiences between IPPAE participants❓ A whole weekend to get to know each other and learn together ❗

From 20 to 22 May the IPPAE scholarshipholders from Giessen and Hohenheim went together with the program directors Prof. Regina Birner and Prof. Martin Petrick on a three-day retreat in the beautiful Taunus region 🏞️.
The event aimed at using the synergies from the cooperation more intensely and enabling networking activities among the IPPAE PhD students from both universities. It combined an intensive professional exchange with leisure elements such as hiking and BBQ and social networking, including also the family members of the IPPAEs. The retreat, financially supported by the DAAD, was a complete success and everyone benefited from the exchange and networking among each other´🤝.

IPPAE Deep Dive Seminar with Archana Sathyan from Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), India

The IPPAE Deep Dive format serves as a platform for invited alumni of the IPPAE program to report on their work experience, their career path and offers an opportunity to respond to specific questions from IPPAE students, alumni or other colleagues. With this offer, together with our program partners of the University of Hohenheim, we want to further strengthen the cooperation with and integration of our alumni into the IPPAE program and the two universities more broadly.

On Thursday, 3 February 2022 we gladly welcome Dr. Archana Sathyan, an alumna of the IPPAE programme and JLU Giessen. Archana is currently working as an Assistant Professor at the Kerala
Agricultural University (KAU) in India. Her main research focus is on Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation Studies, Participatory Approaches in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, and
Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems. She is also an active member of the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at JLU.

IPPAE receives funding from DAAD for another eight years and expands its focus on sustainable food systems 🌱

▶️The successful conduct of the joint International Doctoral Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems (IPPAE) of the Universities of Giessen and Hohenheim will continue as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has approved funding for another eight years until 2030. 👆

▶️The program is promoted within the scope of the DAAD funding program “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS)”. Both universities have acquired funds for scholarship holders of more than two million euros each, in the years from 2022 to 2030. In addition, around 480 thousand euros will be available for support and supervision. ‍🎓

▶️The IPPAE program enables professionals and executives from developing and emerging countries to support the development of the agricultural and food system within their countries of origin in the long term. IPPAE aims at exhausting the full potential of the agricultural sector to achieve food security and in the fight against poverty, to use natural resources more sustainably and open up new opportunities resulting from the global development of the bioeconomy and the conversion to bio-based management.

▶️The focus is still on the key areas of agricultural economics and bioeconomy; however taking into account future developments such as discussed during the “World Food Summit” of the United Nations. The program will expand its focus on sustainable food systems. The education will be geared towards innovative, holistic concepts and consider the whole value chain. 🌍

🔜This expansion of the program’s focus will also result in a change of the name of IPPAE, from “International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Rural Development” to “International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems”. The already familiar abbreviation IPPAE remains!

▶️IPPAE was founded in 1991 and thus builds on 30 years of experiences and successes. Between 1991 and 2020, a total of 225 PhD students graduated from the program, 123 in Giessen and 102 in Hohenheim. The vast majority of applicants came from countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. About 86% of graduates‍🎓 returned to their country of origin, taking over leadership positions and becoming key decision makers.✔️◀️

Call for Application 📩 Interested in an alumni seminar of the HSWT?

Hereby we would like to inform you about a joint announcement of the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) together with German universities Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and Trier University of Applied Sciences.

The HSWT is organizing an alumni seminar in English language supported by the DAAD on the topic:

Improved use of natural resources in developing countries - innovations in resource efficiency, decentralized energy systems, bioenergy, solar energy and sustainable land use.

Due to the global pandemic situation, the seminar will take place over the period September 2021 - September 2022 in a virtual format in the form of online seminars and workshops.

In October 2022, seminar participants will be invited to Germany for two training weeks. From 17 - 23 October, 2022 a training week will be held in Triesdorf and from 24 - 28 October, 2022 a training week will be held in Birkenfeld as part of the International Circular Economy Week.

For more than 30 years, Weihenstephan - Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences has been involved in development cooperation through partnerships with international partner universities, with whom projects are jointly developed and implemented. The HSWT has unique expertise in modern and practical agricultural and environmental technology education in the area where science and practical application meet.

This experience is used within the framework of the alumni special project to deepen the knowledge of resource efficiency, decentralized energy systems, renewable energies and sustainable land use among 25 participants by means of practice-oriented further education in the cross-border exchange of knowledge and experience. The use of renewable energies is essential for increasing agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses and counteracting climate change. With the focus on the four core points, the HSWT wants to build expertise and give inspiration for practical implementation, so that the use of natural resources and the further development of social, ecological and economic systems can be implemented with own ideas in the home countries of the participants.

The programme includes theoretical learning units, practical sessions including external teaching events (excursions), the individual presentation of one's own project study or working environment with national context, as well as group discussions.

IPPAE Deep Dive Seminar with Jonathan Mockshell from CGIAR Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT

On May 25 2021 Jonathan Mockshell will join our PhD students and report on his professional career, share his experiences and respond to specific questions from our scholarship holders.
He is a Scientist - Agrifood and Innovation Systems Economist at the CGIAR Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT, and Co-leader of the Evidence Clearing House for Digital Innovations in Food Systems. His research for development is at the interface of agrifood sustainability, digital innovations in food system, and nutrition sensitive agriculture.

He is an associate research fellow at the German Development Institute in Bonn and a member of the sustainable food systems program of the United Nations 10 Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption and Production. Jonathan received his PhD and MSc degrees in Agricultural Economics at the University of Hohenheim, and BSc in the same field at the University of Ghana.

During the IPPAE Deep Dive, Jonathan will talk about the linkages between his PhD work and his further career path, and his current projects and activities at CIAT. You will have an occasion to meet the current IPPAE directors and coordinators online, as well as the current IPPAE students at the universities of Giessen and Hohenheim. Participants are welcome to ask questions.

The “IPPAE Deep Dive“ Seminar will take place online via Zoom on 25 May 2021 from 8:30 to 10:00 h CEST. We would like to warmly invite you to join this session.
