That’s a wrap for this semester’s AgScience on Tap series.

Our final speaker, Dr. Mascha Gugganig, spoke about what social science perspectives can contribute to agricultural research, and where stronger links between disciplines could open new paths for collaboration.

Her key takeaway:
We need more collaboration between agricultural sciences and social sciences, and there is real interest, especially among students, for this kind of work.

A thoughtful end to a series on Social Factors in Agriculture, and a hopeful note for future exchanges across disciplines in Weihenstephan and beyond.

🐄✨ Kleines Wunder im Stall: Kuh Franka bekommt Drillinge

Die 8-jährige Braunviehkuh Franka am 14.11. gleich drei gesunde Kälber zur Welt gebracht – ein extrem seltenes Ereignis.
Zuerst wurden die beiden Bullenkälber Falko und Franz geboren – und zwei Stunden später überraschte Fidibus alle als drittes Kalb.

Auch zwei Monate nach der Geburt sind Mutter und Kälber gesund und entwickeln sich gut.
Die Drillinge wurden auf ganz natürlichem Weg gezeugt.

Ein besonderer Moment für den ganzen Betrieb. 🐮✨

𝗔𝗴𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗽: 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲

Gene editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas are often discussed at a technical or political level, but how do the farmers most directly affected perceive them?

At our latest AgScience on Tap, Amy Clare (TUM) shared insights from her research with small- to medium-scale livestock farmers in Bavaria. While many farmers expressed cautious optimism about the potential of gene editing to improve animal health, the discussion revealed a deeper challenge: regardless of their views, farmers felt unable to speak publicly about the topic due to its controversial nature and their vulnerable position within agricultural and societal debates.

A key takeaway from the evening:
For new agricultural technologies to be discussed meaningfully, spaces are needed where affected actors can speak openly and without fear of backlash.

Economic pressure, climate risks, and growing societal expectations are pushing crop production systems to evolve. But how can novel technologies support more sustainable and economically viable farming?
At our most recent AgScience on Tap event, Olivia Spykman (LfL) shared insights from the Future Crop Farming Living Lab, where autonomous field robots, biodiversity, and farmer perspectives all come together.

𝘼 𝙠𝙚𝙮 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙚:
Technology, labour, and biodiversity in agriculture are closely interconnected. As we reduce labor input and introduce new tools, such as crop robots, we must also adapt agricultural systems.

The discussion highlighted both the promise and the complexity of integrating automation into fields, as well as why system-wide thinking is essential for future crop farming.

Why do we often say we value sustainability, fairness, or health — but make food choices that tell a different story?

In last week’s AgScience on Tap talk, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐃𝐫. Gesa Busch explored the citizen–consumer gap and the many factors that shape our daily food decisions — from convenience and price to habits and heuristics.

A key insight from her talk:
