Thailand 2016🇹🇭
After more than two weeks of graffiti and action, I was ready for a break. My beloved wife Frau K. had also arrived by then, and we embarked on a little island-hopping trip in Thailand. But first, we spent two days in Bangkok, where I met, among others, C***R MSK who also arranged a great spot for me to paint right in the city center. No—not the spot by the river that everyone knows! More like a small, private hall of fame. But we didn’t linger long in this vibrant melting pot and sped on to Koh Samui, where we slowly began to get into the Thailand spirit. Renting scooters, cruising, sightseeing, eating, and soaking up the country and its people. (Sometimes, though, I still find it strange to hear my native language on every corner in faraway lands.)
Next, we visited some very small islands, including Koh Phi Phi and Koh Yao Yai. My good friend KATUN_ from Kuala Lumpur gave me a tip on how to easily get at least a six-pack of spray paint onto the plane so I could leave my mark on the island too. I won’t go into detail about how that worked. Anyway, once I arrived in Koh Yao Yai, I was all set. Apparently, I was the first person on this tiny island to have arrived with spray paint. I didn’t want to just paint a wall and offend the locals, though. So I scouted out different spots and asked around. Pictures on my phone and showing respect were a big help. After a few rejections, I actually found a young woman who said I could paint the side of her shop. I immediately accepted the offer, and a short time later, I had a crowd of onlookers who showed us the true meaning of Thai hospitality, providing us with drinks and fruit. A few days after our departure, I even received an email from the local school principal asking if I was still on the island and if I’d like to paint some walls at the school with the local kids. Unfortunately, we were already on our way again, and my small supply of paint had run out. Damn! In any case, Thailand remains an incredibly fond memory, and I’ll certainly be back.
