Start exploring. Try things. Get a feeling for what works and what does not work.

In this video, I’m exploring a new surface material in one of my modular surface bags. Many people asked me over the years what I actually fill in those bags and I have extensive material on that in my Foley Guild teaching vault.

It’s just a glimpse into this world highlighting that you should just go and try things with different materials. The bags alone are not the full system to record proper sound effects and Foely in your home studio or edit suite. Many people don’t have a poor concrete that is non-resident and laying on the ground level like I have in my studio now. And for the most time of my professional career, I even also didn’t have that. That’s why I invented the Foley station system. Who can flex with Excel skills?

Game Audio is way more technical than sound for linear post production. Many systems work together and Sound is often thought in single sounds. These sounds are called assets. Tools like excel often handle huge asset counts in the thousands or more.

It might be counterintuitive to say learn excel before you learn any middleware. But that’s what all directors say according to Brian Schmidt who was a guest on my Podcast Pro Audio secrets.

How do you go about it? Does Excel get the same law than your favourite DAWR engine or middleware?

Handling props as an art and itself.

Getting familiar with the material is not where it starts. It starts with your vision of the sound that you wanna hear. This is the creative process where things come to mind objects we could try. And then we get in touch with the material and see what we can get out of the prop. Sometimes it’s combining it with something else and other times it’s looking for something else.

Putting in the hours is key to become consistent throughout a take.

RCP = Resonance Chamber Principal

With this principle you can make sounds bigger than life. You can change the tone of a sound and make it fit to the needs of the scene you’re working towards.

There are always three things when it comes to great Foley and performed sound effects:

1. The creative idea combined with experiential knowledge about what the scene or sound needs

2. A great performance through the take

3. A thoughtful recording that sets everything into perspective.

Being a shoe nerd can be helpful when starting out in Foley. This video I explained what different types of shoes I recommend of gathering for walking Foley.
From boots to sneakers to heels to speciality types of shoes like flip-flops everything needs to be there to cover movies TV shows or games. The older to show off the better so going secondhand is definitely worth it and cheaper as well as a nice side effect. With my size of US 14 for sneakers, I almost never find shoes secondhand. As I am a shooter myself, I could start with a decent collection more than a decade ago. Since then, new shoes of course entered my studio. I always look for sale items still over the years it was I think a significant amount of money that went into shoes. The good thing is some of my shoes are shoes that I actually also like wearing in the real life so when they’re quite new and then always wear them on the street as well. Let me know which shoes do you have if you wanna start out with Foley? Is it only three pairs that you own or do you have a collection as well?

Foley is a craft. It needs to be practiced.

Many things go into this art. Not only movement and performance - it’s also understanding the medium and knowing what translates and helps telling the story. Most of this is experiential knowledge. That’s why effort over gear is absolutely true.

Start with what you have and get a feeling for your body and other peoples movements.

Explaining my basic cloth setup. Shaping the sounds by layering different types of shirts and a jeans.

Anticipating the motion of a person is key.

A trick to keep things on the spot is to always keep moving on a micro level so that you are most agile.

Beginners should really study a scene before going for it.
