KOCHEN vs. BEKOCHEN
The German verbs "kochen" and 'bekochen" are closely related and both have to do with cooking. However, they differ in what they focus on and how they are used in a sentence.
🔹 KOCHEN
✅ Meaning: to cook / to prepare a dish
With kochen, the focus is mainly on the act of cooking or the food being prepared.
✳️ Structure
kochen + Akkusativ
→ when you mention what you are cooking
It can also be used without an object.
✅ Examples
1. Ich koche jeden Abend.
→ I cook every evening.
2. Ich koche eine Suppe.
→ I’m making a soup.
3. Sie kocht heute Nudeln.
→ She’s cooking pasta today.
You can also say:
Ich koche für meine Kinder.
→ I cook for my children.
Here, für + Akkusativ tells us who the food is intended for.
🔹 BEKOCHEN
✅ Meaning: to cook for someone / to prepare meals for someone
With bekochen, the focus is on the person you are cooking for.
✳️ Structure
jemanden bekochen
→ Akkusativ
The person receiving the food is the direct object.
✅ Examples
1. Ich bekoche meine Kinder.
→ I cook for my children.
2. Meine Frau bekocht mich jeden Tag.
→ My wife cooks for me every day.
✴️ Important
Unlike kochen, you don't use für with bekochen to express the person being cooked for:
❌ Ich bekoche für meine Kinder.
✅ Ich bekoche meine Kinder.
However:
✅ Ich koche für meine Kinder.
→ I cook for my children.
Both sentences are grammatically correct:
Ich koche für meine Kinder.
Ich bekoche meine Kinder.
✴️ What's the difference in nuance?
1. Ich koche für meine Familie.
→ I cook for my family.
This simply tells us who the food is intended for. It is a neutral statement about cooking.
2. Ich bekoche meine Familie.
→ I cook for my family. / I prepare meals for my family.
Here, the focus is more strongly on the family as the people being served. Depending on the context, bekochen can also suggest taking care of someone by preparing food for them.
