Well, this week took an unexpected turn. 🇩🇪
A letter from the Amt arrived and with it the news that I need to take a German test on Friday as part of my immigration process.
Not quite the preparation timeline I would have chosen. 😅
So this week has become a crash course in adapting: online lessons, vocabulary drills, der/die/das, einen/eine/ein… and as much German as I can squeeze into a few days.
Today that took me to a free language round table, where I found myself sitting with people from Ukraine, Taiwan, Indonesia, Morocco, Turkey, Chechnya.
Different countries. Different reasons for learning. Different levels of German. All sitting around the same table, trying, making mistakes, helping one another and figuring it out as we went.
It struck me that this is also what being Rooted in Calm means to me.
Calm isn’t the absence of pressure or uncertainty. Sometimes the situation matters, the deadline is real, and you simply don’t have as much preparation time as you’d like.
The question is what you do next.
For me this week: adapt, focus on what I can control, ask for help, keep learning — and show up on Friday.
Now, back to German. 🇩🇪🤞

Today has been a total yo-yo kind of day.

One of those days when the rosy newness of living somewhere new has worn off a little, and suddenly all the differences seem to glare at you.

The tiny things that normally roll off my back, today, somehow didn’t.

And just when I’d had about enough, the woman at the pharmacy picked up on my accent and quietly gave me a happy little cent back — because my change was exactly that.

Such a tiny gesture.

She heard the careful, slightly too-formal, accented German. She knew I wasn’t from here. And somehow, in that tiny exchange, I felt seen.

I walked out almost in tears.

Not because of the cent, of course. But because on a day when everything felt a little foreign, someone noticed — and chose kindness.

Sometimes it really is the smallest things that bring you back. ❤️

She was my Dolly Parton angel today 😇

In January I ran the Edmond Half Marathon in literally freezing temperatures, waiting for my dissertation grade and questioning several of my life choices.

Eight months later: four half marathons, a 70.3, an MSc with Distinction — and somewhere mid-move between countries, navigating the particular adventure that is immigration.

It’s been a lot.

But perhaps the biggest challenge this year hasn’t been any of those things.

It’s been choosing to leave something good.

Leaving something that isn’t working is one thing. Leaving something you worked hard to build, that is good, because you believe there might be something else ahead of you — without knowing exactly what that something is yet — is quite another.

And I’m still very much in the middle of that story.

Somewhere amongst the running, riding, swimming, yoga, studying, moving and figuring-things-out, though, a few ideas have started to come together.

So for now, I’m happy to sit, put my headphones in and chill.

The next chapter can wait a minute.

But I have a feeling it might be an interesting one.

First: Zell am See. 😉

I started sorting through years of cards, thinking I’d keep only the photo cards and the “pretty” ones.

But then something shifted.

The handwritten notes, the simple messages, the Christmas cards: before, during, and after COVID started to tell a story.

A timeline of 13 years in the Netherlands.

One holiday season at a time.

What I thought was de-cluttering became something else: a simple reminder of how full these years have been.

13 very fortunate years 🤍

A reminder that Earth Day isn’t just about the planet we stand on,
it’s about how we live on it.

Grateful for this this life ❤️

So much to be grateful for - slowing down allows me to take it all in.

Lately, performance hasn’t looked like pushing harder.

It’s looked like getting focused.

Too many goals dilute energy.
Too many voices blur direction.
Too many “shoulds” crowd out what actually matters.

So I’m choosing differently:

What I must do
What I truly want to do
And letting the rest fall away

Focus feels quieter than juggling.
It looks like getting focused.r more honest.

Calm, for me, is learning to put things down
without guilt, without drama, without explanation.

🌿 Calm in progress.

Coming back here with a vision — not a plan (and I do love a good plan).

I haven’t shared here in a while. Life has been full, layered, and a little kaleidoscopic.

This is my 2026 vision board. I reused the same digital template I made in 2024 (there wasn’t one in 2025), and the first thing that struck me was how colorful it is.

Living life in color feels closer to my core self. 🌈

2026 feels like a year of transition, travel, balance, and exploration, gently fanning the flame of creativity and spirituality, rather than forcing it.

A quiet side note that still gives me goosebumps: when I made my 2024 vision board, that year unfolded nothing like I expected. But there was a photo of running on it. In 2025, I ran a marathon… and completed a 70.3 Ironman.

A reminder that sometimes the vision lands... just not on our timeline.

Here’s to moving into 2026 with curiosity, courage, and maybe a little Year of the Horse energy: momentum, freedom, and forward motion. 🐎✨
