The Center for Law, Behavior, and Cognition (CLBC) at the Faculty of Law invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position (39,83 h/w TV-L E12/13). The position is fixed-term for 2 years. It is funded by DFG as part of a joint research project “Experimental Legal Philosophy: The Concept of Law Revisited“ with researchers from PUC-Rio. No teaching requirements apply. The position is to be staffed as soon as possible.

It is funded by DFG as part of a joint research project “Experimental Legal Philosophy: The Concept of Law Revisited“ with researchers from PUC-Rio (https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/434400506?language=en). No teaching requirements apply. The position is to be staffed as soon as possible.
CLBC is an interdisciplinary research institute at the law faculty at Ruhr-University. It pursues naturalistic and experimental approaches in the philosophy of law and neighboring disciplines. At Ruhr-University, CLBC cooperates with the Experimental Philosophy Group Germany and the Center for Mind and Cognition.

"Testing Public Meaning: Do Originalist Methods of Corpus Linguistics and Dictionary-Use Reliably Track Public Meaning?".

Abstract (kindly provided by Kevin):
"Influential theories of interpretation recommend using dictionaries or corpus linguistics to discover a legal text’s “original public meaning.” But do originalist methods of corpus linguistics and dictionary-use accurately reflect original public meaning? A series of experimental studies (N = 1,327) reveals systematic divergences among the verdicts delivered by modern concept use, dictionary use, and corpus linguistics use. I argue that the data suggest that the current originalist methods of dictionary and corpus linguistics use are often inaccurate measures of public meaning. Theories that rely on these tools, such as Public Meaning Originalism, have an empirical burden to demonstrate a reliable use of these methods in interpretation."
