Workshop Mustafah Abdulaziz
July 20 to 24 2026 in Berlin
„Baseline“
Application deadline June 7 2026
“Baseline” is a five-day intensive workshop focused on the development of long-form documentary photography projects. The workshop examines how sustained work emerges from individual experience, research, and evolving perspective, and how these elements coalesce into a coherent photographic voice. Through a balance of conceptual discussion and practical application, participants will engage with topic selection, research methodologies, project organization, and the realities of working in the field. Attention is given to sequencing, narrative structure, communication, and strategies for presenting and supporting projects, including grants and alternative forms of pitching. Participants may work with existing projects or use the seminar to initiate new work. The aim is to provide focused tools and critical frameworks that clarify direction, strengthen authorship, and identify pathways for continued development beyond the course.
In five varied seasons with theoretical and practical lessons, participants will explore unusual approaches to visual storytelling from Mustafah’s documentary approach. By the end of the course, participants will have a grasp of their own voice and approach with a clear direction for where to pursue the next phase of their vision.
This course is an intensive series, designed to explore the nature of visual storytelling and the understanding of how one’s own voice is expressed, what tools and ideas can be applied to push the boundaries of a photographer’s understanding, capacity, and potential. Each day will include assigned viewing materials, both photographic and cinematic, along with photographic assignments to be completed each evening. There is a high expectation of continued study after each class concludes. The course will culminate in a project brief on the last day, defined with the assistance of Mustafah, that will provide participants with a road map for their photographic practice. This workshop is held exclusively in English.
