I teach classical violin, Scottish/Irish folk fiddle, and psychological skills in practising and performing music. I was inspired to take up violin at the age of 7 when I watched the film James and the Giant Peach – the grasshopper playing Bach had me hooked. I started lessons in classical violin in my hometown in central Scotland and went on to study at Scotland’s best music school, the Royal Con
servatoire in Scotland in Glasgow. During my studies I was lucky to play with professional orchestras such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, and take masterclasses with amazing soloists such as Nicola Benedetti, Leland Chen, Ilya Gringolts, Maciej Rakowski, and Professor Harold Herzl. As a freelance musician I have worked as an orchestral and chamber musician, as well as a session musician playing for rock bands and folk bands. I have performed on a Disney cruise ship while sailing in the Caribbean, and I have played American folk style fiddle accompanying legendary singer Thomas Hampson in the Hamburger Staatsoper. I have over 14 years’ experience as a violin teacher and I am trained in several pedagogies such as Colourstrings, Dalcroze Eurythmics, and Orff Schulwerk. I have taught for various public and private schools in Scotland and I am experienced coaching my students through exams such as school music qualifications, and ABRSM/ Trinity College exams. As well as teaching the violin I also teach music theory up to ABRSM Grade 5, and musicianship/aural skills. My teaching is deeply informed by my masters’ and PhD in music psychology. I specialise in the psychology of performing and practising music, which means I coach my students through performance nerves, and tailor their learning plan uniquely to keep them motivated, making progress, and having fun. I also enjoy working with more advanced students to help them practice more efficiently and perform with confidence and joy!
