Because of COVID-19 outbreak, almost everyone started working more time from home. This modality is awesome... right up until you spill your coffee over your computer, or you have to change from your pijamas for a video-call, or your neighbor starts firing up noisy machinery across street...

Before coronavirus, WFH every once in a while was a luxury that our respective company afforded us, but turning our home into our office is tricky even in the best times, as it can be extremely hard to separate work from life when you they're both happening at the same place.

Here are a few tips that can help you stay productive and maintain balance while working remotely.

MARCELLE'S STORY 💪🏼💜
"I started programming to personalize my fashion blog. Then one day, when I was frustrated with my job, my father came to talk to me that I could be a programmer and for that, I would have to study hard. Then my father started to guide me and guide me on how I could look for more knowledge. That's when I started to study PHP and JavaScript and started to develop my first projects. But as I gained knowledge I missed having women in this area and I was upset because I didn't see women talking about programming, that's when I came up with the idea to start sharing basic IT knowledge and tutorials to be done on the smartphone so that anyone can start programming. Nowadays I continue to share knowledge so that anyone knows that they can program even if they are a black woman. - "

JACKIE'S STORY 💪🏼💜
"I'm Jackie, I'm a Software Engineer at Rolls-Royce Aerospace in Berlin. I studied mechanical engineering with a focus on numerical simulation and started my career as an Aerospace Grad in late 2018. I quickly realised I loved writing code to analyse data and automate tasks, so I started learning web development and computer science at home. Eventually, I joined my friends in developing a SaaS platform and learned a lot about writing maintainable code and designing distributed, scalable systems in the cloud. It's been one hell of a journey and I'm loving it. I love the power and freedom that these skills give you, it's the closest thing to being a magician, and I'm super proud of all us girls in tech, breaking stereotypes and building things that make life better :)" -

JESSICA'S STORY ❤💪⠀

“Hi, I'm Jessica (), a full-stack software engineer at Fidelity Investments.

I had bounced around several majors going through university before getting my bachelor's in computer science. I was hesitant because I knew it was such a male-dominated field and my personality didn't "fit the profile". It was hard being the only woman in the class and I didn't want a career where I was alone.

It wasn't until I started my first software engineering position that I met other women in tech with similar interests and hobbies that I really resonated with. I realized had I met people like this early on, I would have been less intimidated to pursue engineering.

For that reason, I started posting about engineering lifestyle on my IG and blog at jessicahua.com in hopes that I can inspire other women to fuel their passion for technology.” -

ANNABELLE'S STORY 💜💪⠀

"My name is Annabelle Nwaokorie and I have always been interested in tech. My studies started in 2014 when I began my honours undergraduate degree in Physics with Medical Physics and Bioengineering. It was a four year degree and I graduated with first class honours. Straight after my BSc I was awarded a scholarship for part of a MSc in medical physics in Galway. My masters was one year with a mix of research learning and taught modules. I was awarded first class honours in my masters as well. In 2019 I was successful in obtaining a PhD position in UCD. My discipline is in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics. My research focuses on ways to improve therapy for cancer using computational methods. I'm currently in my 9th month of my PhD and so grateful for the experience and opportunity so far.

My advice to all women out there is to follow their ideal path, work hard, take breaks and always be focused on the end goal!" -

BEA'S STORY ❤💪⠀

“I was born in a big and wonderful city (Barcelona), but when I was 12 y/o, I moved with my mum and brother to a small town in Tarragona. Since I was a child, my mum used to say me how far I was going to get because of my ambitions and curiosity. At that moment, I was just that, a child, and I did not know the meaning of her words. I was the first in my family to get a university degree and be interested in science, so I was just following my dreams. After I finished my bachelor´s degree in chemistry, I continued my career, and I enrolled a Master´s degree in Catalysis. It was then when I started to discover the marvellous world of research and sustainable chemistry. Already during my master, I terribly wanted to go abroad temporarily to experience life in a more different environment than I was used to. I had the feeling that I wanted to be challenged and go further in my career. It was in 2015 when I got the opportunity to do my PhD in one of the best catalysis groups in Europe, Weckhuysen´s group (Utrecht University). My project was focused on developing new catalytic and sustainable routes for the production of commodity chemicals. To achieve so, we were using biomass-derived compounds instead of petroleum-based. After four years of self-learning, ups and downs, teaching and tons of experiments (including failed), a booklet came out, my PhD Thesis. Today, based in Brussels, I am working for one of the biggest energy companies in the world, Total, and doing what I love the most, research in sustainable chemistry to mitigate global warming. In fact, I will always remember all the people that did and did not trust in me, and I thank them all for making me the scientist (woman) I am TODAY!” - ✨
