🎓 Education in the Czech Republic vs. CIS: What is the difference that will change your life?
Dreaming of a European degree but used to a system where the main thing is cramming for an exam? 😅
Let’s be honest: moving from a school or university in the CIS to a Czech university isn’t just a change of city. It’s a change of the rules of the game. At MSM Academy, we see this «culture shock» in our students every year. And you know what? It’s a positive shock! ➕
Many think that studying in Europe is «just different.» But how exactly does what you’re used to at home differ from what awaits you in Prague?

⚔️ BATTLE OF SYSTEMS: HOME vs. CZECH REPUBLIC ⚔️
1️⃣ WHAT IS THE FOCUS? 🏠 At Home: Often lots of theory and «cramming.» The goal is to memorize and reproduce information at the exam. 🇨🇿 Czech Republic: Practice and critical thinking. The goal is to understand, analyze, and learn to apply knowledge in real projects. Your own opinion is valued here, provided it is well-argued.
2️⃣ PROGRAM FLEXIBILITY 🏠 At Home: A rigid schedule for 4-5 years. You get a list of subjects — you follow it. Almost no choice. 🇨🇿 Czech Republic: Freedom of choice! There is a mandatory «backbone» of subjects, but you choose the rest YOURSELF. Want to study economics but add a psychology or IT course? Easy! You are the architect of your own education.
3️⃣ THE PRICE 🏠 At Home: Either high competition for limited budget spots or paid tuition (which often gets more expensive). 🇨🇿 Czech Republic: FREE in state universities. The main condition is studying in the Czech language. (Spoiler: it’s realistic to learn it in a year with our courses!).

💡 THE MAIN PLUS: Czech universities value your independence. There is less control «from above,» but more responsibility on you. As a result, graduates aren’t just people with a diploma, but professionals ready to solve real-world problems and work in international teams.

Studying abroad is cool, but it requires organization! Our graduates shared their secrets on how to manage everything: classes and Prague sightseeing!

Save and use them!

The Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of intense work, 5 minutes of rest. This is the ideal rhythm for concentrating on new material and fighting procrastination. 🍅

Vocabulary Visualization: Forget boring lists! Link new words to places in Prague, to people, or to pictures. Went to a café — associate the words with coffee! This anchors memory in context.

The Study «Duo»: Find someone on your course with similar goals. Exchange notes, check each other’s homework, and even speak the target language outside of class. Support is half the battle!

📍TOP bright Czech holidays

🤍 Since the mentality of Czechs and russian speakers is very similar, these peoples have quite a lot of common holidays. They celebrate the New Year, Christmas, Victory Day, Christmas Eve, Easter, May 1, etc. But we will focus on festivals and celebrations that are held and organized only in the Czech Republic. And so, let's go:

📌Feast of St. Barbara (celebrated on December 4). The Czechs believe that Saint Barbara helps all people who live in good conscience in all "earthly" affairs. On this day, it is customary to cut cherry branches and put them in the water, watching them: if the branch manages to release buds and green leaves by Christmas, then the year will be sure to be happy.

📌 The day of St. Nicholas (Mikulas). Since St. Nicholas is considered the protector of children, it is the kids who are at the center of the event on this day. On December, the first matinees are held in the Czech Republic, and their production always proceeds approximately according to the following scenario: the “angels” come on stage together with the “devil” and Mikulash and approach the parents of the children, asking which of the children behaved well during the year. After that, gifts and sweets are distributed to the kids.

📌 Festival of the five petal rose. The holiday is celebrated in mid-June in Krumlov, and its celebration looks like a colorful carnival. Festival participants dress in traditional Czech clothes, act out skits, dance, and have fun. The celebration is very colorful and lasts 3 days.

📌 Beer Festival. The whole world knows that the Czechs brew excellent beer, and the organization of beer festivals here has already become a centuries-old tradition. The two-week celebration dedicated to the intoxicating drink, which takes place every year in Prague in May, is a large-scale and colorful event that attracts many tourists. During the holiday period, the outskirts of Prague turn into a full-fledged mini-city with many tents, shops and tents with beer snacks and drinks. Participants of the event dress up in unique costumes, and national music sounds on the streets.

So that a nightmare of you standing at the airport and realizing that you forgot your passport does not come true, check all the necessary papers in advance! Passport, insurance, confirmation from the university or any other proof that you are really a student, visa, bank statement, IELTS results, your diploma or high school diploma (or better, both). Make all the necessary copies (it is more expensive abroad) and collect everything in one folder so that it is more convenient to search if necessary at customs.
📌 Stock up on medicines!
Believe me, when at ten o'clock in the evening you will beg the pharmacist to sell you a painkiller stronger than Nurafen without a prescription, you will curse yourself for cramming the fifth blouse into your suitcase, but not putting life-saving drugs.Painkillers, antibiotics, any drugs in ampoules and even alcohol to buy in Europe and America just like that - IMPOSSIBLE! You will need a special prescription that the therapist will write, but if you suddenly get sick before you get to the therapist, you will have to beg for pills from friends. Of course, if you take some medications on an ongoing basis, then take them with a margin - doctors will prescribe some drugs for you only after a full examination, and this is extra money.
📌 Visit your bank in advance and inform that you are moving abroad.Many banks are very reluctant to resolve issues by phone, and coming to a branch if you are in another country is at least problematic. To prevent your card from being suddenly blocked due to suspicious activity in suspicious territory, inform the manager in advance that you are moving in order to save yourself a lot of nerves in the future. At the same time, you can change your current account to a euro one to make it easier to transfer money.
