🌍 Fellows at EGU 2026
Our Dust-DN fellow Semontee Deb gave a PICO presentation titled “Evaluation of WRF-Chem dust emission schemes and land surface models over the dust belt” at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna.
Her work evaluates how different dust emission schemes and land surface models perform within the WRF-Chem regional atmospheric model, aiming to improve the simulation and representation of dust events across the global dust belt from North Africa through the Middle East to Central Asia.
Semontee is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD researcher at The Cyprus Institute, where her research combines numerical weather prediction models, satellite data, and ground-based observations to enhance the characterization of dust transport in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.

Looking back at a great few days at the Dust-DN workshop 2026 in Larnaca!
At this European Workshop on Atmospheric Dust, we explored dust impacts across microphysical processes, source regions, climate interactions, remote sensing, observational approaches, and socio-economic aspects. We were really pleased to hear interesting lectures and presentations from Dust-DN scientists and PhD candidates
as well as researchers from outside Dust-DN (who we refer to as Dust-DN friends).
We ended the workshop with good memories, meaningful discussions, and a growing community of researchers and experts. This photo captures a memorable moment of this event.

🌍 Fellows at EGU 2026 | Dust optical properties in the UV
Our fellow Miguel Huerta presented his poster “Dust optical properties in the Ultraviolet (UV)” at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna.
The work focused on retrieving the direct interactions (scattering and absorption) between mineral dust aerosol and UV solar radiation within the UV-A spectral range (320–360 nm), comparing two independent methodologies based on Brewer spectrophotometer measurements and the GRASP inversion algorithm.
Miguel is based at ETH Zürich 🇨🇭 and PMOD/WRC Davos, contributing to a better understanding of dust–radiation interactions in a so far underexplored part of the solar spectrum.

An incredible week at the First Dust-DN Training School in Nicosia!
The First Dust-DN Training School brought together the Doctoral Candidates of the Dust Doctoral Network on Atmospheric Dust (Dust-DN) and invited participants for an intensive five-day programme hosted by the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute in Nicosia.
The school combined scientific lectures from leading European experts with hands-on transferable-skills training, outreach activities and visits to key research infrastructures, including the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) at Orounda and the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO) at Ayia Marina.

When Giants Rise… the sky gets heavier.
Why do the largest dust particles, the "super-coarse" giants, still matter for Earth's climate?
In our latest Fellows' Corner post, doctoral candidate Ginés Garnés Morales explores how these oversized particles travel further than expected and reshape our understanding of dust's role in radiation.

"Something is falling from the sky… and it’s not rain"
Where do aerosol particles really come from? And what can they reveal about their journey?
In our latest blog post, doctoral candidate Marcos Eduardo Pérez Morán explores dust samples from the central Mediterranean, a meeting point of air masses from North Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic. What reaches the ground isn’t just dust, it’s a fingerprint of its journey through the atmosphere.
