Local learning ecosystems idea, can radically transform the way education takes place in learning contexts. At the heart of an ecological perspective on learning is the need to make connections across formal, informal, and everyday learning (Bevan, 2016).
Local learning ecosystems comprise diverse combinations of providers (schools, businesses, community organizations as well as government agencies), creating new learning opportunities and pathways to success (Hannon et al., 2019).
The complexity and uncertainty of work and life in the 21st century requires systems to be resilient. People are required to show adaptive capacity and see how their own learning ecologies can fit the greater puzzle, their workplace, their family, their community and the society at large.
Educational empowerment expands beyond school grounds, in that learning can be both synchronous (scheduled classes, virtual classrooms) and asynchronous (anytime, anywhere). Emerging models try to propose the ideal route for meaningful ubiquitous and hybrid learning, as a response to this evolving reality.
Participatory design and co-design of learning, are key drivers in local learning ecosystems, and hold promise to prepare all learners to become future-ready, through incorporating understandings of sociocultural and holistic conceptualizations of pedagogy as cultural intervention in human development.

Lab Operations draws on the theory and research conducted by Educational Peaks, focusing on key challenges that societies face in the field of education worldwide. Among the challenges for schools in the 21st century, based on different reports, including the European Education and Training Monitor for 2017, has been to tackle the pace of technological and digital change:
https://ec.europa.eu/education/policy/strategic-framework/et-monitor_en
In relation to the latter, it has been found that we must no longer teach our students in a fixed mindset for standardized skills, but instead focus on helping them develop a growth mindset. The only way towards this pathway, is by infusing digital technologies in a meaningful way so as to enrich their learning experiences and support development beyond digital competences.
Yet currently, as the European report shows, only a quarter of European school children are taught by digitally confident teachers. One significant aspect of developing digitally literate students based on the findings of research undertaken by Educational Peaks, is to enable the sort of professional development programmes or schemes, which will help develop digitally literate teachers.
It is anticipated that these professionals will then be adequately trained to feel confident enough to teach using innovative approaches for the use of collaborative practices and networking projects. The above hypothesis will be tested during the field-based work carried out by Lab Operations.

Hello everyone,
Amidst of the summer hiatus, we are diving into learning stemming from the principle of experiencing learning by doing. Our primary engagement is with regards to the practical implementation of research in the following key areas (although not exhaustive of the topics of interest) that will determine the future of 21st century education:
- Connectivism and Personal Learning Networks
- Learning Management Systems
- Design Thinking for Higher Education
- Museum Multiliteracies Practice
- Maker Education
- Augmented Reality for STEAM
To explore the latter areas, our methodological approaches involve both qualitative and quantitative methods such as but not exclusively:
- Design Based Research (DBR)
- Learning Analytics
- Ethnography
- Surveys
Carried out by Educational Peaks.
