🌊 COASTLINE went to RSCy 2026 in Cyprus!

Our Coordinator, Apostolos Papakonstantinou, presented the COASTLINE project in the talk: 👉 “A Geospatial Framework for High-Resolution Coastal Mapping”

🗓️ 27 April · Coastal, Marine & Water Systems session

Our coastlines are changing fast — erosion, sea-level rise, and human pressure. We showed how COASTLINE (EU Horizon 2020 / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) brings together satellites 🛰️, drones with LiDAR 🚁, and machine learning 🤖 to map and predict these changes in high resolution, and to help protect coastal habitats and heritage.

Our goal? A smart, easy-to-use platform that helps scientists and decision-makers see how our coasts evolve — in 2D and 3D, in real time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and for the great interaction! 👋

Wrapping up an incredibly rewarding secondment of Pietro Marco Santoro with the COASTLINE project (Horizon Europe MSCA) at Aegean Solutions! 🏛️🌊

His work focused on multi-hazard risk assessment for coastal archaeological sites in Cyprus combining satellite-derived hazard data, site vulnerability characteristics, and visitor exposure indicators into a single, standardized Risk Index (R = Hazard × Vulnerability × Exposure).

What excites him most is that this methodology is built entirely on open, public data, which means it's not locked to Cyprus. It can be extended to other coastal heritage sites across the Mediterranean, providing institutions with a ready-to-use decision-support tool for prioritizing conservation and monitoring efforts where they're needed most.

It was a genuinely unique experience to study archaeological sites through a completely different lens, literally "seeing" them from space, and translating satellite and open geospatial data into something institutions can act on directly.

Thankful to Aegean Solutions for hosting him and supporting this work. 🙏

🌊Had the pleasure of visiting Aegean Solutions in Mytilene, Lesvos, as part of the COASTLINE Horizon Europe MSCA Staff Exchanges field trip for Study Area 3 (8–12 June 2026). We worked closely with partners to advance research on coastal monitoring, UAV-based surveys, and geospatial data acquisition for coastal erosion assessment.

A highlight was collaborating with our CUT secondees Marco and Lemonia, whose enthusiasm and commitment drove the preparation and ex*****on of the activities, alongside the dedicated Aegean Solutions Mytilene team, whose expertise and support were invaluable throughout the mission.

Great to also work alongside Alessandra Capolupo from Politecnico di Bari, reflecting the interdisciplinary, international spirit of the COASTLINE consortium. Our discussions covered fieldwork objectives, data acquisition strategies, and future collaborative research on coastal dynamics and environmental change.

The visit centered on meetings, data processing, and planning discussions for future research directions, supporting ongoing work on aerial and satellite investigations and coastal erosion monitoring in the Eressos coastal area.

A sincere thank you to the entire Aegean Solutions team for their warm hospitality and excellent collaboration. Initiatives like COASTLINE show the value of international staff exchanges in building lasting partnerships, sharing expertise, and developing solutions for sustainable coastal management.

🌊 COASTLINE at ICCSA 2026!

We are pleased to share that the COASTLINE Project was presented at the 26th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2026), hosted by the University of Minho (Braga, Portugal).

During the conference, Alessandra Capolupo (Politecnico di Bari) presented the preliminary results of Work Package 5, showcasing the development of an integrated multi-source geospatial framework for assessing coastal risks and modelling cascading hazard processes.

The presentation highlighted how COASTLINE combines:
📍 multi-source geospatial data,
🌊 hazard characterization,
🔗 cascading risk modelling,
🏘️ exposure and vulnerability assessment,
📊 risk prioritization, and
🧭 decision-support tools,

to support more informed and evidence-based coastal resilience strategies.

These preliminary results represent an important milestone toward delivering innovative methodologies that help stakeholders better understand complex coastal dynamics and strengthen climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

A big thank you to the ICCSA 2026 organizers for providing such an inspiring venue for scientific exchange and collaboration!

Muhammad Ali Kapri, PhD candidate at the Politecnico di Bari (POLIBA), is currently spending 2 months at FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas) in Crete as part of the MSCA Staff Exchanges project COASTLINE.

During his secondment, Muhammad Ali is working on one of the key challenges affecting coastal areas: soil salinization. By combining Sentinel-2 and PlanetScope satellite imagery with advanced geospatial techniques, he is developing methodologies to identify vulnerable areas and support salinization risk assessment in coastal environments.

This experience is not only advancing research activities within WP5 but also strengthening scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange between project partners, contributing to the development of innovative solutions for coastal risk management.

A big thank you to our colleagues at FORTH for their warm welcome and continuous support!

We are delighted to host Evangelia Metochianaki from Αιγαίου Solutions ΑΕ at the Cyprus University of Technology / Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου as part of the COASTLINE project! Over the coming month, she will focus on the changes in the Cypriot coastline during antiquity.

Her research project is based on geoarchaeological studies of ports and coastal areas, with a particular emphasis on the southern and western coastlines. Within this framework, she will examine the factors that led to these environmental shifts, analyzing the combined impact of human intervention, tectonic activity, and natural causes.

This could provide a valuable analytical model for long-term coastal evolution, essential for understanding historical topography and managing the modern coastal zone.
We’re looking forward to seeing the interesting outcomes of her research! 💪✨
