🔔 Cyprus Electricity Market — Eight Months On ⚡
📉 Lower prices in May 2026 — but Cyprus continues to record higher wholesale electricity prices than most European markets.

The latest PHAETHON Electricity Market Report examines how growing PV generation, record Forward Market activity, and the structural characteristics of Cyprus's electricity system shaped market outcomes during May 2026.

📊 Key insights:
💶 Average Day-Ahead Market (DAM) price: 153.80 €/MWh — the second-lowest monthly average since market launch.
📈 Volume-Weighted Average Price (DWAP): 206.96 €/MWh — remaining well above the average DAM price despite the decline in monthly prices.
⚡ Zero-price events: Recorded on all days except 3 May, driven by strong midday PV generation and relatively low demand.
🔥 Evening price peaks: MCP reached 262 €/MWh, as conventional generation met demand after renewable output declined.
⚡ Forward Market (FM): Average traded volume reached 126.99 MWh — highest since market launch.
🌞 Generation mix: Conventional generation fell to its lowest DAM level since launch, while PV continued to suppress midday prices.

🔎 New in this report:
🌍 First comparison with European electricity markets, highlighting that Cyprus continues to record substantially higher wholesale electricity prices than most interconnected European markets despite lower prices in May.
📊 Expanded analysis of market dynamics, showing how Forward Market commitments, renewable generation and electricity demand jointly determine Day-Ahead Market outcomes.

🗣 “The May results highlight an increasingly mature market, where growing PV generation is delivering more frequent low- and zero-price periods and contributing to the second-lowest average market price since launch. At the same time, the analysis confirms that structural characteristics of the Cypriot electricity system continue to keep wholesale prices well above most European markets, while record FM activity points to the growing importance of forward trading in electricity price formation,” notes Dr Andreas Kyprianou, Associate Professor at UCY, Member of PHAETHON CoE, and co-author of the report.
