Subject: Call for support - Student protests in Serbia
Dear colleagues,
As members of the international artistic and academic community, including university professors and staff, theater professionals, filmmakers, cultural workers, musicians, visual artists, performers, curators, librarians, and members of representative associations, we stand in full solidarity with the students and the entire academic community in Serbia, who have been facing increasing violence and repression during their ongoing protests.
Over the last two months, students engaged in peaceful blockades have been subjected to severe physical violence, including severe beatings and intentional car assaults. The initial spark for these protests came after the tragic collapse of the concrete canopy at the main railway station in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, which claimed 15 lives and left two others severely injured. The station, which had recently undergone renovation, was reopened without the necessary safety certifications. This tragedy sparked widespread protests, including everyday silent 15-minute street blockade protests. During these protests, peaceful demonstrators are repeatedly subjected to physical and verbal attacks.
The first attack on students occurred in front of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, carried out by a group of ruling party officials and related individuals. This incident ignited a wave of solidarity among students, leading to nationwide university blockades that halted all classes and exams. Students have self-organized through direct-democratic student bodies, or plenums, calling for the full disclosure of documentation related to the station renovation, accountability for those responsible for the tragedy in Novi Sad, legal consequences for assaulters on peaceful demonstrators, and the release of detained protesters. They also demand improved study conditions and greater visibility on the public broadcasting service, which is supposed to operate independently but remains under full government influence, limiting media freedom.
Since then, students have received support from their professors and the wider community in participating in the protests, which highlight broader concerns, including corruption, the lack of transparency in major state projects, and the erosion of institutional independence, leading to the near-total dysfunction of state institutions and government control over the media. We would also add that during this period students and the academic community are continuously slandered, humiliated, and insulted by government representatives, often being labeled as individuals financed and instructed by foreign services. Not only does this damage our reputation and integrity but it also strains our relations with international colleagues. Moreover, it had direct consequences for foreign students, cultural workers and colleagues, who were detained and forcibly deported from our country by authorities, marked as a threat to Serbia’s security. This marks a troubling path of violence and damage to long-established ties within the global cultural, artistic, and academic community.
On January 28, the Government of Serbia was dissolved, but this does not yet ensure the fulfillment of the students' demands and the accountability of all those responsible for the incidents described above. Therefore, we call for an immediate end to the violence and pressure against students, and for the urgent fulfillment of their key demands: justice for the victims, full transparency, restoration of functional institutions and independent media, and the guarantee of a safe return to academic life.
Until these demands are met, there will be no going back to our regular teaching activities, as we, employees of the four art faculties within the University of Arts in Belgrade – the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Applied Arts and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts – support and accept these demands as our own. These demands are crucial for establishing a society with trust in our institutions, reclaiming our basic human rights, and there is no other priority than fulfilling the above mentioned demands.
We urgently call for international attention to this matter and the active support of the global academic, cultural and art community. Please consider sharing this message within your networks and taking a stand in support of our students and academic community.
Thank you for your solidarity and support.
