Our annual CPR and emergency response course isn’t just for teachers. This year, before classes started, drivers, kitchen staff, and cleaning staff took it too, along with everyone else who works on campus.

It’s training that doesn’t distinguish between roles, because an emergency doesn’t either.

En Gaia, el curso anual de RCP y manejo de emergencias no es solo para maestros. Este año, antes de iniciar clases, también lo tomaron choferes, personal de cocina y limpieza, junto con todo el equipo que trabaja en el campus.

Es un entrenamiento que no distingue entre roles, porque una emergencia tampoco lo hace.

The campus fills up with teachers again this week, before it fills with children.

The whole early childhood team spends the week in certification with LifeWays North America, an organization that trains early childhood educators in a relationship-based approach rooted in home life, drawing on the same principles that shape Waldorf pedagogy. In grades, teachers are setting up classrooms, reviewing the year ahead, sitting down to talk through each child they’re about to welcome. The administrative team is doing the same, in parallel.

Different tables, all working toward the same thing: arriving ready.

Esta semana el campus vuelve a llenarse de maestros, antes que de niños.

Todo el equipo de preescolar pasa la semana en certificación con LifeWays North America, una organización que forma a educadoras de primera infancia en un enfoque basado en el vínculo y en la vida cotidiana del hogar, con raíces en los mismos principios que sostienen la pedagogía Waldorf. En grados, los maestros arman sus aulas, revisan el año que viene, se sientan a conversar sobre cada niño que van a recibir. El equipo administrativo hace lo suyo en paralelo.

Violin is part of the children’s musical journey at our school. It’s not just a technical skill because learning a stringed instrument asks for listening, posture, coordination, and above all, consistency.

This instrument isn’t learned overnight. Students sing the melody first, imitate short phrases, move to the rhythm before ever playing it, the body understands before the hand executes. This is how the Waldorf pedagogy we follow at Gaia works, shaping the whole person.

Caring for it, bringing it on music days, practicing with patience when the sound doesn’t come out right yet, all of this is part of the learning. Children gradually take on their own responsibility for their practice. That’s the meaning behind every music class at Gaia.

El violín forma parte del camino musical de los niños en nuestra escuela. No es solo una habilidad técnica porque aprender un instrumento de cuerda pide escucha, postura, coordinación, y sobre todo, constancia.

Este instrumento no se aprende de un día para otro. Los niños cantan primero la melodía, imitan frases cortas, se mueven al ritmo antes de tocarlo, el cuerpo entiende antes que la mano ejecute. Así trabaja la pedagogía Waldorf que seguimos en Gaia, formando a la persona completa.

Cuidarlo, traerlo cada día de música, practicar con paciencia cuando el sonido aún no sale, todo esto es parte del aprendizaje. Los niños van tomando, poco a poco, responsabilidad propia sobre su práctica. Ese es el sentido detrás de cada clase de música en Gaia.

The garden doesn’t know we’re on break.

It keeps growing, changing, and surprising us every day.

While we wait for our students to return, we’re continuing to care for the corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, green beans, papayas, watermelons, hibiscus, herbs, and everything else that’s quietly growing.

When the children return, the garden will have new stories to tell, too.

La huerta no sabe que estamos de vacaciones.

Sigue creciendo, cambiando y sorprendiéndonos cada día.

Mientras esperamos el regreso de nuestros estudiantes, seguimos cuidando el maíz, la yuca, el camote, las vainicas, las papayas, las sandías, el hibiscus, las hierbas y todo lo demás que sigue creciendo en silencio.

Cuando los niños regresen, la huerta también tendrá nuevas historias que contar.

What you just saw were small moments from a Main Lesson, the heart of the morning in a Waldorf school.

There is movement. There is rhythm. There are verses, coordination, and focused attention before opening a notebook.

Then comes the work of the block they are exploring. It may include writing, mathematics, geography, art, or any other area of the curriculum. Over the course of several weeks, each morning revolves around a single subject, allowing students to explore it through a variety of experiences and develop a deeper understanding.

That entire journey is reflected in their Main Lesson Books, created by the students themselves.

This is how a morning of learning begins at Gaia.

Lo que acabás de ver son pequeños momentos de una Lección Principal, el corazón de la mañana en una escuela Waldorf.

Hay movimiento. Hay ritmo. Hay versos, coordinación y atención antes de abrir un cuaderno.

Después llega el trabajo del bloque que están explorando: puede ser escritura, matemáticas, geografía, arte o cualquier otra área del currículo. Durante varias semanas, la mañana gira alrededor de un mismo tema, permitiendo que los estudiantes lo exploren desde distintas experiencias y construyan una comprensión más profunda.

Todo ese recorrido queda plasmado en sus cuadernos de Lección Principal, creados por los propios estudiantes.

Así comienza una mañana de aprendizaje en Gaia.

Here’s a design most families don’t expect: across Gaia, main lessons are taught in the homeroom teacher’s native language, so Language class exists to give full immersion in the other one.

In the Lower School, Maestro Nicolás, an actor and musician who’s taught in Waldorf schools from New York to Minneapolis, brings that immersion to life through guitar, songs, and storytelling, just one part of how he makes the complementary language come alive for every group.

As a result, no child misses out on either language, no matter which teacher they get.

Este es un detalle que muchas familias no esperan: en toda Gaia, las lecciones principales se dan en el idioma nativo del maestro principal, por eso existe la clase de Lenguaje, para dar inmersión completa en el idioma complementario.

En el Lower School, el Maestro Nicolás, actor y músico que ha dado clases en escuelas Waldorf desde Nueva York hasta Minneapolis, da vida a esa inmersión a través de guitarra, canciones e historias, solo una parte de cómo hace que el idioma complementario cobre vida en cada grupo.

Como resultado, ningún niño se queda corto en ninguno de los dos idiomas, sin importar qué maestro le toque.

Today we honor the land that holds us.

Every July 25th, Costa Rica marks the anniversary of the Annexation of the Partido de Nicoya, a date that shaped the history of the region we now call home.

At Gaia, we’re grateful to learn and grow on the Nicoya Peninsula, a place known for its extraordinary biodiversity, its sense of community, and its deep connection to nature. Surrounded by forest, trails, and natural springs, we live and learn in a setting that invites observation, exploration, and a real relationship with the natural world.

This land inspires curiosity, respect, and a way of learning that reaches far beyond the classroom.

Hoy celebramos la tierra que nos acoge.

Cada 25 de julio, Costa Rica conmemora la Anexión del Partido de Nicoya, una fecha que marcó la historia de la región que hoy tenemos el privilegio de llamar hogar.

En Gaia agradecemos poder aprender y crecer en la Península de Nicoya, un lugar reconocido por su extraordinaria biodiversidad, su sentido de comunidad y su profunda conexión con la naturaleza. Rodeados de bosque, senderos y nacientes de agua, vivimos y aprendemos en un entorno que invita a observar, explorar y desarrollar una relación cercana con lo natural.
