6 things we carry that nobody warns us about and we navigate silently 💯

1. Financial: Ask specifically about your school’s emergency aid fund (many campuses have one that’s underused because students don’t know to ask). Before accepting any loan, ask the aid office to walk you through the actual repayment number, not just the amount borrowed.

2. Imposter Syndrome: try to join student orgs and get involved. I found that when I connected with others that looked like me, I wasn’t alone anymore and my confidence was building.

3. Guilt over leaving Family: share with your family what your day to day looks like. Invite them in. Many times they simply aren’t aware of how to help since you’re the first in the family.

4. Navigating academic systems: Find one staff person, advisor, TRIO counselor, EOPS/EOP, connect with someone on campus that can be your resource or join a program that provides advising, it helps a lot!

5. Balancing jobs with schoolwork: this one was hard for me, but if you can get a job on campus that would help! But find jobs that work with your schedule. By schedule I mean your class schedule and your personal schedule as well.

6. Lack of professional networks: use LinkedIn to reach out to alumni of your college to learn about their journey and any tips they can provide. Most of us out here are always open to help!
