On October 7, 2024, a group of students from the Department of Industrial Design (IND) at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) visited a public nursing home (Weiting Nursing Home) in Suzhou, which is home to eight older people. This activity was part of the public service initiative of IND and part of the research component of the Studio 3: Design For Market course. The students distributed snacks to older people and conducted interactive activities such as origami, drawing, gomoku, and so on, and older people warmly invited the students to visit their rooms. During the visits and communication, the students gained insights into the needs and ideas of older people and discussed them further, which will help them improve their age-friendly design plans in the following lessons.

The event was coordinated by Prof. Emanuela Corti and Dr. Mariia Zolotova from the IND, Honey Wang from the LearnWill Cultural Center, and Lizhen Li from the Weiting Nursing Home. The visiting group was led by Lei Mao, a PhD student from the IND, and Y3 undergraduate students Sisi Wang, Ruihan Cai, Hongyi Zhou, and Chaoying Xing participated as group members.
