The word 摸鱼mō yú originated from the Chinese set phrase “浑水摸鱼” (hún shuǐ mō yú). Originally the phrase means that, as fish would be confused and dizzy in the muddy water, the catchers could take advantage of it.
In other words, 浑水摸鱼 means that you take advantage of other people when the timing is chaotic/ there is a mess.

For 摸鱼, however, the meaning is slightly different. In Chinese, it means that one’s being lazy during working hours/ slacking off. Specifically, it’s about doing something irrelevant to your work during office hours.
