Hebei United University, located in Tangshan the most promising city at the centre of Bohai Bay Rim, is one of the ten key universities of Hebei Province, China. It is a comprehensive university taking engineering and medicine as the backbone and pursuing a harmonious development of engineering, medicine, sciences, economics, management, law and humanities. Education programs are provided for masters, bachelors, international students and adult students.

The university is located in Tangshan, an open city in the Bohai Rim, bordering Beijing, and Tianjin. The university was founded by Hebei Province and the Ministry of Coal Industry in 1958 and was named Tangshan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The staff was composed of cadres and teachers from Kailuan Coal Mine Bureau, Tangshan Railway College and other institutions. In 1959, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Tianjin University with its teachers and students was incorporated into the institute. Since its founding, the university has used names such as Tangshan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Tangshan Institute of Science and Technology, Hebei Institute of Technology. In May, 2010, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name to Hebei United University.
The university consists of 17 colleges, offering 55 undergraduate specialities, 28 master programs, and 7 programs of master of engineering. It has the qualification to enrol master applicants at equivalent educational level and international students. Moreover, it has 3 provincial key disciplines, 2 disciplines to be specially developed by the province, and 4 provincial key labs.
The university has a group of more than 900 high quality professional teachers, including over 400 professors and associate professors. About sixty percent of the teachers have postgraduate qualifications.
Hebei United University possesses good teaching facilities. The total value of instruments for teaching and scientific research adds up to a hundred million Yuan. The well-furnished language labs, computer rooms, multi-media classrooms, plotting and painting classrooms, laboratories, library, and modern technology education centre can meet the needs of teaching and research.
At present, there are about 20,000 students of different levels studying in Hebei Polytechnic University. The university has always taken teaching as the core, adhering to the concept of “uphold technology and value application” so as to improve the quality of education constantly. The rate of graduate employment has been among the best for many years in the province. In 48 years since its founding, the university has cultivated about 60,000 experts, professors, technicians and high-ranking managers for various trades.
In the last three years, the university has undertaken 560 research projects of various kinds, including 17 state-funded projects such as research projects of “National 863 Plan”. Research funds added up to about a hundred million Yuan. It has gained about a hundred awards, including 23 awards at provincial and ministerial levels and above. 40 monographs and 2815 essays were published with 231 essays being embodied by the three major indices. The university has also developed new/high tech industries energetically.
The university thinks highly of international academic exchange and cooperation. It has established cooperative relationships with many foreign universities, such as Leeds University in Britain, Missouri University in America, Tokyo University and Hokkaido University in Japan, Pacific National University in Russia, Dresden University of Technology in Germany, South Australia University, Adelaide Secondary School of English in Australia and the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto in Brazil. Such exchanges with educational organizations abroad highly increased the university's quality and level of education.
Hebei United University, devastated by the Tangshan Earthquake in 1976, has undergone ten years’ resumption, ten years’ development and ten years’ leap during the thirty years after the disaster and has made great achievements one after another.? The teachers and students have been carrying forward the school spirit of “working hard to seek truth”. With great enthusiasm and high morale, they are building Hebei Polytechnic University into a teaching and research oriented university with distinct characteristics of its own.
