One of the biggest gaps in autism therapy isn’t a lack of services.

It’s the lack of integration between services.

ABA analyzes the function of communication.
Speech therapy develops the structure of language.

Both are essential.

But when they operate in silos, learners receive two therapy plans instead of one coordinated path.

I’ve spent years working across both disciplines as a BCBA and Speech-Language Pathologist, helping teams bridge this gap.

I recently launched a consultation platform dedicated to integrating the science of behavior and communication development.

If you're a clinician who believes collaboration should be more than a buzzword, this work may resonate with you.

自閉症介入中最大的一個缺口之一,並不是服務不足。

而是服務之間缺乏整合。

ABA 著重於分析「溝通的功能」。
語言治療則著重於發展「語言的結構」。

兩者都不可或缺。

但當它們各自獨立運作時,孩子往往接收到的是兩套不同的治療計畫,而不是一條整合一致的發展路徑。

多年來,我同時以 BCBA 與語言治療師的身份跨領域工作,協助團隊彌合這個關鍵缺口。

我最近也建立了一個線上諮詢平台,專注於整合行為科學與語言發展的專業知識。

The Hidden Problem in Autism Therapy
When ABA and Speech Therapy Target Communication — But Teach It Differently

BCBAs focus on the function of communication—why a child communicates and how behavior is reinforced.

SLPs focus on the form of communication—how language is structured, expanded, and developed.

Both approaches are essential.

But without coordination, students with autism often receive two separate communication systems instead of one integrated treatment plan.

The result?
Conflicting prompting strategies
Misaligned goals
Slower progress for the child

I believe most BCBAs and SLPs want to collaborate!!

They just lack a shared framework to make it work in real clinical settings.

當 ABA 與語言治療都以「溝通」為目標—但對溝通的定義卻不同

BCBA(行為分析師)接受的訓練是分析語言的功能——孩子為什麼會溝通,以及什麼樣的增強(reinforcement)維持這些溝通行為。

SLP(言語言治療師)則專注於發展語言的形式與複雜度——溝通是如何被組織、如何逐步擴展與發展。

兩個專業其實都在處理同一件事:溝通。

然而,當這兩種方法在沒有共同合作架構的情況下各自運作時,學生往往會同時接受兩套平行的溝通訓練方案,而不是一個協調一致的治療計畫。

我相信大多數 BCBA 和 SLP 其實都真心希望能夠合作。

但在真實的臨床環境中,由於訓練背景、專業術語、提示策略以及治療目標的差異,往往導致溝通介入變得零散且缺乏整合。

目前的討論常將ABA與NDAP(神經多樣性認同實踐)對立起來。關鍵區別在於:ABA是一門中立的學習科學,而NDAP是一項必要的倫理實踐方針。問題不在於「我們如何學習」科學本身,而在於那些忽略學習者的不良應用方式。我們的目標,是運用對學習的理解,幫助神經多樣化人仕達成他們的目標,同時秉持尊重、取得同意,並保護那些神經多樣化特質,並處理那些影響安全、健康與生活品質的挑戰。這條以人本為中心的平衡之路,是未來倫理治療實踐的方向。

Current discussions often pit ABA against NDAP (Neurodivergent-Affirming Practices). The crucial distinction is: ABA is a neutral science of learning/teaching, while NDAP is a necessary ethical practice framework. The issue does not lie with the science of how we learn itself, but rather with its poor application that neglects the learner.

Our goal is to use the understanding of learning to help neurodivergent individuals achieve their objectives, while upholding respect, obtaining consent, and safeguarding their neurodivergent traits, all while addressing challenges that impact safety, health, and quality of life. This balanced, person-centered path is the future direction of ethical therapeutic practice.

Understanding and Responding to Challenging Classroom Behaviors: Shifting from ”Correcting“ to ”Supporting“

Behavior is a signal. Challenging behavior often indicates overwhelm or unmet needs, not simply defiance.

The Iceberg Theory: Beneath the surface lie issues like frustration, anxiety, or sensory overload. Behavior is a form of communication.

Key Strategies for a Supportive Classroom:

Environment: Create predictability with visual schedules and clear instructions. Set up a calm-down corner.

Sensory Needs: Adjust lighting and noise. Offer tools like fidget toys, privacy boards, or resistance bands.

Transitions: Use visual timers and give advance warning to lower anxiety.

Schedule: Alternate high-focus lessons with active ones. Use the ”First... then...“ structure.

Scheduled Breaks: Build in functional breaks (like brief reading or a simple task) to prevent burnout.

Task Breakdown: Divide large assignments into small, manageable steps to build success.

Incorporate Interests: Use student preferences in lessons and rewards to boost motivation.

5:1 Positive:Corrective Feedback Ratio: Aim for 5 specific praises for every 1 correction. Actively ”catch“ good behavior.

Teachable Moments: Help a student regulate first. Teach after they are calm, not during emotional escalation.

Co-regulation: Stay calm yourself. Acknowledge and name the student‘s feelings. Use calming strategies together (e.g., deep breathing).

Behavior is communication.

Environment manipulation is the key to prevention.

First co-regulate, then address the problem.

80/20 法則

原則: 一個彈性的活動比例,用以在「維持參與度」與「技能建立」之間取得平衡。80/20可視為起步點,可以因應治療進度調整。

80% 時間:低需求活動
例如:示範使用AAC、密集式教學中先引入以掌握技能、在自然情景教學中先跟隨個案的興趣和引領。應用廣泛。
目的:建立信任關係與行為動能。

20% 時間:目標性、高需求任務
例如:AAC教學內引導使用核心詞彙。密集式教學中引入新的目標,ZPD  (zone of proximal development) 最近發展區內的語言或語音目標。
目的:教導特定技能。

背後原理: 此比例能預防個案耗竭,並確保學習是系統性的。比例會隨著個案的進步而動態調整(例如 70/30, 60/40)。

記住:「言語治療提供教學內容, ABA提供教學策略」,天衣無縫。
