March marked a busy and exciting first month of the Spring semester for Fudan EMA students!

Our Double Degree EMA students successfully passed their Master's thesis pre-defence in early March and have since, together with second-year students, submitted their work for blind review. Wishing them the best of luck in the upcoming thesis defence!

For our first expert talk of the season, we welcomed Dr. Chen Hui from Henkel's Organization Development Operation APAC. Dr. Chen shared key principles for executing a successful AI strategy, sparking discussions on the role of AI in our lives and how to integrate it into work and organizations.

All in all, March was a wonderfully fruitful month for EMA students, especially after the long winter break. We can't wait to see what April has in store! 🌸

FAQ: Student activities

1. What kind of social and networking events are organized for EMA students throughout the year?
EMA students can participate in a wide variety of events from cultural events to trips to cooking and gaming activities. Besides, new types of events are constantly created for EMA students specifically, making them English-friendly and often centered around international business and finance.

2. Does EMA organize guest lectures, industry forums, or chats with professionals beyond the regular curriculum?
Yes, beyond the regular curriculum, there are events organized for all EMA students, such as guest lectures, career workshops, consultations with professionals, industry expert talks, various visits to Chinese and international companies and more. Some events may be more relevant to senior students, but, generally, they are universally helpful and interesting to all years of our students.

3. Are current students able to connect with EMA alumni for career advice?
Yes, this Spring, we are launching a program where EMA alumni will be sharing their personal career experiences after graduating from Fudan. The first alumni sharing session will be held in March and will be centered around the experience of working in China as a foreigner.

4. Does EMA provide individual career consultations?
Yes, there are one-on-one consultations with a specialist available to book for EMA students. Their main purpose is to help with career planning, job search strategies, interview practice and more.

5. Are there popular weekend trips or travel opportunities organized by students or the program to explore Shanghai and other parts of China?
In every semester, there is usually one weekend trip outside of Shanghai, organized by the office. Last semester, for example, students headed to Liyang city for a two-day trip to visit Tianmu Lake and explore the province. The next destination for the Spring semester is to be announced! Moreover, there are other trips organized by the students themselves such as the popular city-walks around Shanghai that are not excusively for EMA students, but for everyone from Fudan who is interested to join.

6. What are the main university-wide festivals or events that EMA students typically participate in?
Every year Fudan hosts massive events for all students like Student Club Fair, Fudan International Students New Year Gala, Guanghua Ball, and other cultural activities including talent shows, music festivals, movie nights, cooking tutorials, artsy workshops, and more.

7. Can all students participate in events?
The majority of events are open to all students and are free of charge, though there are some EMA activities unavailable for non-degree students due to capacity reasons, but this is rather an exception.

8. Are there any sports events?
Yes, sports competitions and festivals are regularly held. You can join a sports club you're interested in and become a part of Fudan's sports life. What is more, every year Fudan Sports Meet is held, where students get to showcase their physical abilities to the whole university.

9. How are cultural and national holidays celebrated?
There are many cultural activitites centered around Chinese cultural and other international holidays (e.g., Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas, Spring Festival, Halloween, Dragon Boat Festival, etc.). Participants are educated on the cultural backgrounds of holidays, get to cook the signature dishes, or learn how to make special holiday attributes. The events are usually initiated by students, and everyone is welcomed to join.

10. Are there any study events organized?
Students are regularly offered to join study trips to other cities, participate in entrepreneurship competitions and case studies, and special educational programs for the winter and summer holiday season.

FAQ: All about EMA courses

1. Are EMA students allowed to choose their courses?
Yes, aside from compulsory courses, that students are required to take and pass, there are optional courses, meaning that the students have to pick a certain amount of disciplines out of the pool, depending on their credits.

2. How many courses are usually taken for one semester?
On average, one semester covers 5-6 disciplines, but it can also be more or less, since you decide your workload yourself.

3. When and how is course registration conducted?
Usually course selection begins during Week 0 and lasts for 2 or more weeks. Everything is handled on the course registration system website online. There you can check available courses and review and print your timetable.

4. Are there any courses offered by the university that focus on China and its economy or financial institutions? Yes, aside from the course 'Chinese Economy' that is compulsory for both tracks, students can also have such courses as 'Legal Aspects of Start-ups Doing Business in China', 'China’s Taxation System and Fiscal Policy', 'Social Security System and Its Reform in China', 'China’s Financial System' and more, either as optional or compulsory courses depending on the track.

5. In what format are classes held?
The classes are usually comprised of lecture, seminar, and case-study portions, often with group discussions and projects, meaning that each class is not limited to one format only. Lesson structures are determined by professors personally.

6. What is the assessment criteria?
Your final grade is comprised of your performance throughout the course. For instance, it may consist of homeworks, attendance, participation, group projects, and final exam.

7. How much is thew final exam worth the grade?
Final exams or final group/individual projects usually weight 30-50% of your final grade.

8. Are there any courses that help with thesis writing?
Yes, among the optional courses you can find 'Dissertation Writing in Economics', which is designed specifically to help graduate students make a transition from coursework to paper writing.

9. Does the program offer opportunities for practical industry exposure, such as organized company visits?
Yes, some courses offer company visits for students, giving them opportunities to connect with the business world of China. The fields are often finance, tech, consulting, e-commerce, and more. Besides, more company visits are organized outside of disciplines for those students who are not enrolled.

10. Can the courses be changed once selected?
During the course registration period (Weeks 1 & 2), students can attend classes they are interested in and switch, if needed. After the deadline, however, the selection cannot be changed.

FAQ: Fudan Campus

1. Where is the Handan Campus located?
The Handan Campus is located in Yangpu District, in the northern part of Shanghai. Near the campus is Wujiaochang, the major commercial, transportation, and cultural sub-center of northern Shanghai. Inside the campus, there is a Fudan University metro station serviced by metro line 18.

2. Is the Handan Campus far from downtown Shanghai?
Considering the size of the city, it is not very far, as key downtown areas like the Bund, People's Square, and Nanjing Road are accessible by metro in 30-45 minutes.

3. What are the main academic buildings and facilities on the Handan Campus?
Key facilities of Handan include:
- The Guanghua Towers: the iconic twin high-rise buildings that house many classrooms and offices.
- The Arts & Humanities Library and the Science Library.
- Zhengda Sports Stadium, multiple gyms, courts, and tracks.
- Various departmental buildings for sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
- Canteens, supermarkets, cafes, etc.

4. Where are the student dormitories located, and what are the room types?
The international student dormitory is located in the northern part of the campus. It consists of the main building, affiliated buildings, and Asian Youth Center (AYC) buildings. 5. What kinds of dining options and cuisines are available on campus?
Campus canteens and cafes offer an immense variety of food, ranging from popular Chinese regional cuisines to localized Western dishes and desserts, allowing international students to get acquainted with local food and try other countries' cuisines.

6. How much does a typical meal cost on campus?
Meals at student canteens are very affordable, with breakfast ranging from 5 to 10 RMB and lunch or dinner costing 10-30 RMB depending on the dish.

7. What is the best way to get to the Handan Campus from Shanghai Pudong / Hongqiao Airport?
- From Pudong Airport (PVG): The most efficient way is to take the Maglev train to Longyang Road Station, then transfer to Metro Line 18 to Fudan University Station (closest to the east side of campus). The total travel time is about an hour.
- From Hongqiao Airport (SHA): Take Metro Line 10 to GuoQuan Road, then transfer to Metro Line 18 to Fudan University Station. The journey takes 60-75 minutes.
You can also take a taxi for a direct route, which will take around 40 minutes, depending on the time of day.

8. Can students easily visit and use facilities at other Fudan campuses (Jiangwan, Fenglin, etc.)?
Yes. The university operates free shuttle buses that connect all major campuses (Handan, Jiangwan, Fenglin, Zhangjiang) for students and staff with a valid campus card. Students can also use libraries and some facilities on other campuses with their student ID.

9. Where is the School of Economics building located on the Handan Campus?
The SOE building is located in the southern part of the Handan campus, which is separated from the rest of the campus by Handan Road. Next to the School building, there are Teaching Buildings 5 and 6 as well as the Arts & Humanities Library. The School of Economics' new office building is scheduled to open in the Spring semester of 2026, located just across the road from the old school.

10. What facilities are inside the School of Economics building?
The current School of Economics building houses faculty and departmental administrative offices, classrooms and lecture halls, computer labs for students, and common areas and study spaces for students.

FAQ: studying at EMA Fudan

1. Does the program include any Chinese-taught courses?
No, all the compulsory courses (except for the Chinese language courses) are English-taught. The professors and teaching assistants are all proficient in English language, ensuring high-quality education and smooth communication. However, optional courses outside of your major can be taught in Chinese.

2. Do Master-level students live on campus?
Yes, all EMA students have an opportunity to apply for on-campus accomodation. Accomodation distribudion is decided on a first come, first served basis. Most EMA students live on campus in the North Area of Handan, though some choose to rent off-campus accomodation.

3. Can I choose courses outside of my major?
Yes, after registering for compulsory courses, you can choose some disciplines available in the system. Please note, that they are likely to be taught in Chinese and the credits will not be counted in your courseload.

4. Can exchange students apply for the program?

5. Will I study with Chinese students?
Only International students are recruited for the EMA program. However, there might be Chinese exchange senior undergraduate students in class. Moreover, all international students will have numerous opportunities to meet Chinese firends through students clubs, company visits, and other informal activities.

6. Are there any Chinese language courses for students without any prior knowledge?
Yes, EMA students can choose the level of Chinese proficiency when selecting the mandatory Chinese language course. The first level (Basic Chinese I) is composed for students with no language foundation.

7. Does every course have final exam?
No, the format of final assessment depends on the course structure. Some disciplines only require presenting a final project or submitting a final essay, while others can have both final projects and final exams.

8. How many days per week do students have to attend classes?
Depending on the amount of courses chosen, the workload may vary, but, on average, studends have classes 3-4 days a week.

9. When do EMA students graduate?
The graduation is scheduled in June. The specific date is usually announced one month before the event.

10. How long does one course usually last?
Generally, most courses are 11 weeks long, but there are some that are longer or a bit shorter.

11. Can I balance my studies and work?
Depending on your courseload, you can combine work with study as long as one does not interfere with the other, given that many courses take attendance. Yet, students are required to undergo an internship (min 2 month long). Thus, EMA students are addvised to do a part-time internship during a semester or do full-time during a break.

12. How to choose the right courses for myself?
You can read course descriptions on our official website or consult senior students about the contents of disciplines. Besides, the course selection will last for about two weeks. During this time, you can attend different classes to see which ones will fit you best.

13. Where are the classes taken?
The majority of classes are taken in different Teaching Buildings on Handan campus, though some classes can take place in the SOE building, Guanghua building, and elsewhere.

14. When is the application deadline for 2026 intake?
The second phase of application will start on March 1st and finish on March 31st.

December unfolded as a month of meaningful closures and warm anticipations.
