The past week allowed many of us to engage with one another in meaningful, creative and thought-provoking ways. From a conversation with a Deaf activist to a dialogue about feminist organizing, from a panel unpacking Chineseness to a crochet workshop untangling stereotypes, from the open house activities on campus to an original play on ZOOM, from hearing perspectives on q***rness to watching a genderq***r fashion show...What did you take part in? What inspired you? 🤩

Last Friday, we watched She(d)ey Groove, an original play created and presented by the NYU Shanghai Thespians Society. By turning on and off cameras and switching between different characters, the performers utilized their creativity with the ZOOM platform we now find familiar and more inspiring than ever. A round of applause to the thespians! 👏👏👏👏

On the last evening of Ally Week, the final event invited 4 amazing panelists to share their insights on q***rness, identity, fashion and self-expression. Gu Li shared that q***rness is not new but rather has existed throughout human history. Cocosanti said that the word “q***r” was once used negatively but later its meaning had changed to one that “bridge[s] the LGBTQIA+ community closer together in a positive light.” Sebastian Cherng explored the concept and culture of q***rness in a global context, emphasizing that the Chinese q***r world is unique and not an imitation of the q***r culture in any Western country. Charlene Liu, co-founder of ShanghaiPRIDE, pinpointed intersectionality and criticized the heteronormaitivty that came into play in le***an relationships. We also got to enjoy the Umbrella Show - a Genderq***r Fashion show! NYUSH community members including students, faculties, and staff members shared their authentic gender and fashion expression through catwalk! 🌈🥰🌈

Yesterday at the in-person workshop “Crochet 101: Weaving Connections, Unravelling Stereotypes,” Professor Monika Lin spoke on the history of fiber art, embroidery in particular, and showed works by artists from Judy Chicago to Jen Bervin to Lin Tian Miao. After that Jiara Sha ’23 and some other Ally Week Ambassadors taught participants some basic crochet stitches. Most importantly, the participants worked collaboratively and collectively on crocheting colorful pieces together! 👫👭👬

Last night, more than 120 attendees took part in the conversation, “Unpacking Chineseness from the Inside Out,” an Ally Week event co-hosted by the Committee on Critical Inquiry and the Office of Diversity Initiatives. Culture, blood, ancestry… Chineseness goes beyond one’s nationality or citizenship, and can mean different things to different people at different times. Sometimes self-proclaimed, other times imposed, Chineseness is entrenched with colonial history, nationalism, power, gender, and more.

Coming up in ONE hour - today at 1PM-2:30PM CST, at the 600 Allyship in Action lounge, we are having an in-person workshop “Crochet 101: Weaving Connections, Unraveling Stereotypes.” Wanna do something creative and fun? Wanna learn more about fiber art and its entanglement with gender? Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of your gender or experience with fiber art! And you can take your artwork away after the workshop!

The very first step you take “may lead you to somewhere and that somewhere can be really amazing,” says Xianan Jin at the Tuesday event “From Marginality to Creativity: Feminist Organizing for Transnational Solidarity.” Being in the margin in one way or another - whether because of race, gender, class, international student status, or the combination of them, the panelists echoed each other in stating that this marginality can nevertheless be transformed into a source of creativity and empowerment, a “radical openness,” (Bell Hooks, 1989) and a profound edge. As another panelist Rachel Kuo puts it, activism is a lifelong process. In this process, we have to believe that “every action counts” (Zoe Zhao); When we start doing little things, people around us will be inspired and join us (Leiyun Ni). Maggie Liang ’22 and Joyce Tan (Diversity Initiatives) moderated the conversation. Ally Week Ambassador Antonia Hua and Margaret Mao took notes and contributed to this post.

The much anticipated annual Ally Week has finally arrived! At 9PM China Standard Time today, Nov 15, we open the week with the very first event “Capital D: 10 Questions for a Deaf Activist from Wuhan.” Cui Jing identifies as Deaf of Deaf, meaning a Deaf person from a Deaf family. She co-founded Prosigner 守语者, an non-profit organization focusing on sign language interpretation, training and Deaf cultural understanding. As a Wuhan local, Cui Jing organized various community initiatives for members of the Deaf community amid the COVID-10 outbreak. As a member of this underrepresented group, how did she become an avid activist? How can hearing people practice allyship? Let’s find out! The conversation with Cui will be moderated by Maggie Liang ’22 and Chelsea McLean ’22, and interpreted by Wanzhen, a hearing person from Taiwan who is also one of the co-founders of Prosigner 守语者.
