2023 Chinese Government Scholarship-University Program

Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must:
1. be a citizen of a country other than the PRC and in good health both mentally and physically;
2. be an academically excellent holder of a bachelor’s degree under the age of 35 when applying for a master’s program;
3. be an academically excellent holder of a master’s degree under the age of 40 when applying for a doctoral program;
4. have passed the HSK (Level 5) when applying for a Chinese-taught postgraduate program;
5. have TOEFL 80+ or IELTS 6.0+ when applying for a English-taught postgraduate program ( for non-native English speakers);
6. meet the admission requirements of the university in terms of academic ability and other relevant criteria.

Application Process

1. Submit an application in the university’s application system before Feb. 15, 2023(https://nuist.17gz.org/member/login.do). Please select “Chinese Government Scholarship”, input application information and upload application documents.
2. Eligible applicants shall attend an academic interview organized by the university in Feb. or March 2023.
3. The university will award a Pre-admission to the selected candidates. The candidates shall complete an online application via the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org).
Please upload the Pre-admission Notice issued by the university and other application documents in the system. Please choose “Program Category Type B” and the Agency Number of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) is 10300.
4. The university shall submit the recommended candidates list to the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
5. The CSC will organize experts concerned to examine applicants' eligibility and academic performance before finalizing the short-list candidates.
6. The CSC will notify the admission results to the university that will subsequently have the applicants informed.

Submit an application in the university's application system before Feb. 15, 2023.

Application Documents

1. Copy of Passport Home Page. If the validity of the applicant’s current passport does not meet the requirement (meaning the passport expires before September 2023), please apply for a new passport before submitting the application;

2. Notarized highest diploma. Prospective diploma winners must submit official proof of student status by their current school. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations;

3. Academic transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. They can be in Chinese or English, but must be attached with notarized English translations if they are in foreign languages other than English;

4. Language qualification certificates. Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must submit a valid HSK (Level 5) report. Applicants for English-taught programs must submit a valid English proficiency certificate (TOEFL 80+ /IELTS 6.0+) if they are from non-English speaking countries;

5. Applicants for doctoral programs must submit an acceptance form signed by a doctoral supervisor from NUIST.

6. A study plan or research proposal. A study plan written in Chinese or English shall contain more than 1,000 characters or words; the proposal of a doctoral student shall be signed by the applicant’s Chinese supervisor;

7. Recommendation letters. Two letters of recommendation (written only in Chinese or English) from professors or associate professors shall be submitted. These letters shall describe the applicant’s objectives of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation of future growth, as well as the cooperation between the supervisors or the exchange between universities both in China and abroad;

8. A photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English (the original copy shall be kept by the applicant). The form is designed by the Chinese quarantine authority and it can be downloaded from

The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months;

9. Non-criminal record report. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application;

10. Other supporting materials (such as published papers, job certificate, certificates of awards and training, etc.).

Reminder: Uploaded application documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use a professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.

Other Information

1. Scholarship recipients shall not receive other freshman scholarships offered by the Chinese government, local governments or institutions at the same time.
2. Scholarship recipients shall not change their host university, major, or duration of study stipulated on the Admission Letter.
3. Scholarship will not be reserved if scholarship recipients cannot register before the registration deadline.
4. Scholarship recipients shall attend the annual review according to the university's Measures on Annual Review of Government Scholarships at the end of each academic year.

2022 Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2022
For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries. The Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers for study of International Chinese Language Education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges (“host institutions”).

As one of the host institutions, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) welcomes students from all over the world to apply for this scholarship.

I. ELIGIBILITY
All applicants shall be
Non-Chinese citizens;
Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school;
In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academic performance and conduct;
Aspiring to work in the Chinese language education and related fields;
Aged between16 and 35 (as of 1September, 2022), with the special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and that of 25 for undergraduate student applicants.

II. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE
The International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship online programs offer tuition fee waiver, while other programs provide full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

III. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS
A. Scholarship for TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) Master Degree
Commences September 2022, and provides scholarship for 2 years. International students shall have bachelor degree certificate, a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level). It is preferred to provide the working agreement or relevant certificate of the proposed institution after graduation.

B. Scholarship for TCSOL Bachelor Degree
Commences September 2022, and provides scholarship for 4 years. International students shall have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level).

C. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study
Commences September 2022, and provides scholarship for maximum 11 months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.
1. TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages)
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score required.
2. Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level).
3. Chinese Language Study
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

D. Scholarship for One-Semester Study
TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy
Commences either in September 2022 or March 2023, and provides scholarship of maximum 5 months. Applicants holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score required.

E. Scholarship for Four-Week Study
Commences either in July or December of 2022, and provides a four-week scholarship. Applicants withholding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.
Chinese Study and Chinese Language plus home-stay Experience in a Chinese Family
HSK test score are required. Organized and applied by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made after consultation with host institutions and submit to CLEC for approval.

F. Scholarship for Online Programs
1. Online Program for One-Academic-Year Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. A general Chinese proficiency test score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) is required, and HSKK scores are preferred.
2. Online Program for One-Semester Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Generally, applicants must have an HSK score (no specific requirements for level or score).

IV. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
1. A Scanned copy of passport photo page.
2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).
3. A Recommendation letter by the head of the recommending institutions
4. A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.
5. Applicants applying for master degree of TCSOL shall provide two recommendation letters from two associate professors or above. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
6. Applicants currently worked as Chinese language teachers shall provide the proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employing institution.
7. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.
8. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (photocopy). The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the results valid for only 6 months.
9. Bachelor and master applicants shall also provide study plan / research proposal.

V. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Online registration will be available from March 1, 2022 on the International Chinese Teachers Scholarship (cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to search recommending institutions and host institutions, upload application materials online, track the application progress, feedback of review and admission results. Scholarship holders need to confirm with the host institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out CIS certificate online, and register at host institutions at the designated date as per the letter of admission.
The application deadlines (Beijing Time) are:
1. April 15th (for Four-week study commencing in July)
2. May 15th (for Master Degree or Bachelor Degree of TCSOL, One-Academic-Year or One-Semester Study commencing in September)
3. September 15th (for Four-week study commencing in December)
4. November 15th (for One-Semester Study commencing in March 2023)
CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. The results will be published about three months before school starts.

VI. CURRENTLY EMPLOYED CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS & CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES
Currently employed Chinese language teachers:
Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.
Chinese Bridge Award Recipients:
Applicants who have won the 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to relevant host institutions on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.
