Educating, inspiring & motivating people, to register as donors. Unfortunately, Margot’s Leukaemia was extremely aggressive.

In October 2013, 14-month old Margot Martini was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of blood cancer and required a bone marrow transplant to stand the best chance of survival. Margot’s mixed family heritage was the key obstacle to finding her ‘perfect’ tissue-type match, owing to the lack of diversity on stem cell and bone marrow registers. Margot eventually found a ‘suitable’ donor match and r

Interview Study Recruitment: Help Us Improve Access to Stem Cell Transplant Treatment

Have you been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) or Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)? Are you a caregiver or healthcare professional supporting someone with AML or MDS?

We are currently recruiting participants for an interview study exploring access to the stem cell transplant (SCT) treatment—especially those from underserved communities. Your experiences could help shape future NHS policy and improve equity in care.

📌 The study focuses on the decision-making process around SCT for AML/MDS patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. We’re particularly keen to hear from individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, whose voices are often underrepresented in research.

💬 Interviews are confidential, flexible, and can be conducted online or by phone. If you or someone you know might be interested, please reach out or share this post. Your story could help transform how care is delivered.

NHS Blood and Transplant moves towards more primary school education activity & adopts givingtohelpothers.org resources

Following the closure of the charity, Team Margot Foundation in December, we have been working towards finding a new “home” for the valuable educational resources Team Margot created, developed and hosted on givingtohelpothers.org

I’m delighted to share the news that NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) have agreed to include some of these resources on their educational platform hub, beginning with an outreach campaign with all primary schools in Brixton, next week.

In a sense, it’s an obvious and natural handover of these resources, given that we initially launched givingtohelpothers.org in partnership with NHSBT back in October 2017.

We are particularly pleased because this shows positive progression by NHSBT towards more primary school education activity.

Aleisha Scott, NHSBT Marketing Manager, said of the forthcoming campaign:

“NHS Blood and Transplant is working in partnership with Lambeth Council and primary schools across Brixton to raise awareness of the impact of blood donation. As part of this work, we are offering schools use of the Team Margot key stage 1 learning resources to further support pupils understanding of donation and to inspire future generations of donors.”

In creating these resources, Team Margot’s intention was that by equipping teachers with engaging, relevant and appropriate resources and also the background information they needed to teach these subjects, we would work towards two of our desired outcomes, namely :

children grow up accepting donation as the norm, not the exception, and for more of them to become registered adult donors
children feel sufficiently empowered to influence their families and loved ones at home and elsewhere, regarding donation

The website, givingtohelpothers.org will close down later this month.

Thank you for sharing.

Happy birthday, Margot x

Were she still with us, Margot would have been celebrating her 13th birthday today. Though she is no longer with us, Margot remains our inspiration.

Below is a link to a few videos, in no particular order, that capture moments from Margot’s journey, her courageous appeal, and the remarkable work of Team Margot over the years. This is but a glimpse of the extraordinary legacy you have helped build and these videos can only begin to reflect the depth of your generosity, commitment, and love.

Thank you for standing with us, for keeping Margot’s memory alive and for continuing to champion this vital cause.

Happy birthday Margot.

‘Chasing the odds: a Journey of Hope’ is a new documentary – released on ITVx TODAY – which follows Peter McCleave on a trip to Macau in search of his stem cell donor match. I joined Peter in Macau for a few days, in a supporting role.

Much like my daughter Margot, Peter’s mixed heritage is the key difficulty in finding his “perfect” donor match.

Some photographs from the ‘drop in event’ today - please see post below for a video teaser of the forthcoming documentary…👇

I attended a ‘drop in’ event in Westminster today, working with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Ethnicity Transplantation and Transfusion

More than a dozen Parliamentarians attended to learn more about the need for more stem cell donors to join the register, especially those with a mixed heritage.

Six months ago, blood cancer patient, Pete McCleave went to Macau in search of his stem cell donor match. Pete’s unusual mix of Chinese, Portuguese and Irish is the key obstacle to finding his donor match.

Next month, ITVx will be publishing a documentary about Pete’s journey to Macau, in search of hope. I was privileged to join him for part of that trip, all of which was recorded as part of a documentary to be released next month.

Documentary maker and newsreader, Mel Barham also attended the drop in session, along with Dr Daniel McCloskey, Salmaan Dalvi Phd, Andrew Foster, James Mackay and Orin Lewis OBE in supporting roles.

Please watch the short trailer and share.
