I live in China, so many people assume speaking Mandarin must be easy for me.

The reality?

I still struggled to find people to practice speaking with.

Instead of waiting for a language partner, I created my own system:

1️⃣ Shadowing native speakers with Pimsleur
2️⃣ Reading Chinese stories out loud
3️⃣ Practicing conversations with AI

These methods helped me build confidence and speak more naturally.

If you are learning Chinese, remember:

You do not need the perfect situation to start speaking. You need a consistent routine.

Six months ago I couldn't get through a single sentence in Chinese without freezing.

I live in China. Mandarin surrounds me every single day. And I still had nobody to actually practice speaking with.

The problem wasn't that I wasn't studying. I was studying every day. The problem was that studying Chinese and producing Chinese out loud at full speed are two completely different skills.

So I built a system using three tools.

Pimsleur shadowing: repeat every sentence at the exact same time as the native speaker. Same speed. Same tone. Same rhythm. I felt stupid doing it. After two months my tones became automatic and I stopped thinking about them.

Reading HelloChinese stories out loud at full speed: not slowly for clarity. Fast. The way real conversation sounds. Speaking and listening training happening simultaneously.

Kimi AI conversations: write in Chinese, get a response in Chinese, reply again. Instant correction at any hour.

The first time I had a full conversation in Chinese without freezing I was standing in a shop in China. No preparation. No script. It just came out.

说实话 that moment didn't come from a conversation class. It came from two months of talking to myself.

I moved to China thinking that being surrounded by Mandarin every day would make learning it fast and natural.

Three things shocked me after I arrived.

First: nobody slows down for you. Real spoken Chinese sounds nothing like textbook audio. My first week here I understood every word I had studied but could not follow a single real conversation at full speed.

Second: tones matter less than I expected in full sentences but far more than I expected when speaking a single word alone. Context saves you in conversation. Nothing saves you when you are standing alone with one word.

Third: the best Chinese practice happens in the most ordinary moments. Not in class. Menus, overheard conversations, someone counting change out loud. The classroom never closes here.

我刚来中国的时候 I thought fluency came from studying harder. Now I know it comes from paying attention to everything around you.

Everyone told me Chinese was impossible to learn alone.

I passed HSK 4 with a high score starting from HSK 1. No tutor. No class. No Chinese school.

These are the four apps I used every single day.

HelloChinese for graded stories and real reading input.
Pimsleur for listening and speaking at natural pace.
Anki for vocabulary that stays in your memory long term.
Kimi AI for instant feedback on every Chinese sentence I write.

Together they cost less than one month of a Chinese class.

Most people quit Chinese too soon. Here is the real reason why. 果汁(guǒzhī) = Juice. Start with words you already use every day.

ChineseStory No.005

At first, this feels like a simple story about two friends.

One is Chinese.
One is American.

They enjoy different drinks, different foods, and they’re learning each other’s language.

Then one sentence changes everything.

ChineseStory #004

An American student moves to Sichuan and suddenly everything is spicy. Dumplings, noodles, even the soup.

But something unexpected happens. He slowly falls in love with hotpot and ends up drinking milk tea three times a day. 🧋

I had a similar experience after coming to China. Foods I thought I would never enjoy have become some of my favorites.

In this video I read the full story in Mandarin and tell it to you in English, so you can follow even if you are just starting to learn Chinese.

How much Chinese could you understand before reading the English?

What's your favorite Chinese food, or which one would you love to try?

Story from HelloChinese

Today's reading is a short story called 是室友,也是陌生人, which translates to 'Roommates, yet strangers.'
It follows two students sharing an apartment in China. One is Chinese with a strict early routine. The other is British and sleeps when most people are waking up. They share a home but barely ever see each other.
The last line of the story is what stayed with me: 小明和马克是室友,也是陌生人,他们很少见面. Roommates, yet strangers, they rarely see each other.
As a foreigner living in China, I've had moments that felt exactly like this. Different schedules, different habits, sharing a space but living in different worlds.

Have you ever had a roommate or housemate where it felt like that? Tell me your story below.
