On the evening of 2026 Teachers' Day, Westlake University set aside research proposals and data sets to celebrate our faculty with a night of European recorder music.

🎶🔭We were honored to host Palisander, a quartet of graduates from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama. By utilizing instruments ranging from 15 centimeters to nearly two meters long, they explored the historic connection between the recorder, astronomy, and mathematics—even featuring Kepler’s musical translation of planetary motion.

AI needs a moral compass. ⚖️🤖

🌍 We recently welcomed Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf, a member of the EU High-Level Expert Group on AI, to Westlake University.

Undergraduate Benedikt Kienle '30 guided the professor through our Residential Colleges, offering a firsthand look at where our students live, study, and collaborate. 🤝

Prof. Hilgendorf then took the stage at the Huxin Lecture to share his insights on the ethical and legal foundations of AI and robotics.

A team co-led by Prof. Huaimin Wang at Westlake University has developed Bip-FK9, a clever self-assembling peptide system that traps and destroys superbugs like a bed of needles—with zero resistance observed across 30 generations.

By using a modular design to target bacterial membranes without harming human cells, this "rallying call" mechanism opens new paths for customizable treatments against drug-resistant superbugs and fungi.

A modular peptide technology that self-assembles into nanofibres on bacterial surfaces through a membrane-anchoring biphenyl group, a diphenylalanine linker and a cationic peptide enables disruption of drug-resistant pathogens.

🐭 The mouse Y chromosome has numerous tandem repeats. Now Yu Lab at Westlake University has generated a telomere-to-telomere assembly: mT2T-Y, a 95.21-Mbp sequence from a 2-week-old C57BL/6 male mouse.

🐭 This high-quality assembly provides a comprehensive view of mouse Y chromosome architecture and supports future functional, evolutionary, and genetic studies.

🎉 The Guomics team led by Prof. Tiannan Guo at Westlake University, together with collaborators, reported ProteinTalks, an operational virtual cell model based on perturbation proteomics that learns how cancer cells respond to drug treatment over time.

🧬 Built on approximately 16,000 time-resolved perturbation proteomics profiles, ProteinTalks models the dynamic trajectories induced by drug perturbations. It predicts responses to individual drugs and drug combinations, identifies candidate proteins associated with drug sensitivity or resistance, enables retrospective patient stratification, and prioritizes compounds in patient-derived organoids.

✨ ProteinTalks introduces a new approach to virtual cell modeling by using time-resolved perturbation proteomics as dynamic supervision and explicitly learning how cellular states evolve over time. This model provides an alternative methodological framework for virtual modeling.

Prof. Wei Kong’s team at Westlake University has demonstrated stable ferroelectricity in single-crystalline 2D-Ga₂O₃ just 6 Å thick—only half a unit cell.
