Session Theme: ♻️ High-quality recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries
👩‍🏫 Session Chair: Xubiao LUO, professor and the Party Secretary of Jinggangshan University
👨‍🏫 Session Co-Chairs: Zhenming XU, professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Hexing LI, professor at Shanghai University of Electric Power
📋 Session Overview:
Driven by the rapid expansion of new energy vehicles and energy storage industries, lithium-ion power batteries (LIBs) are entering an era of mass application and subsequent retirement. Spent batteries are known as "urban mines" containing key strategic metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, yet they also pose potential environmental risks. Their efficient, eco-friendly, and high-value recycling is pivotal for securing strategic resource supply, fostering a circular economy, and achieving carbon neutrality goals. This sub-forum focuses on the high-quality recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries. It delves into maximizing resource recovery efficiency, economic viability, and environmental benefits through technology integration, process optimization, cross-chain collaboration, and policy guidance. The session aims to provide a high-level platform for global researchers, engineers, and policymakers to exchange cutting-edge advancements, stimulate innovative collaborations, and jointly promote the green, low-carbon, and sustainable development of the spent power battery recycling industry.

Session Overview:The transition to a circular economy requires transformative changes in business models. Unlike traditional linear models that follow a “take, make dispose” approach, a circular economy focuses on resource efficiency, waste minimization, and value retention throughout product life cycles.
Educating future business leaders and decision-makers about these models is essential for fostering innovation and achieving sustainability goals. Higher education institutions have a unique opportunity to integrate circular economy principles into business education 2. However, this necessitates an interdisciplinary approach that blends economic, environmental, and social perspectives. This session represents an important global dialogue on reimagining sustainability education across higher learning institutions. It aims to empower educators and students to understand and apply these business models in real-world contexts, ensuring that future professionals are equipped to lead the transition to sustainable economies.
