Poverty doesn’t always shout. Sometimes, it sounds like your mother’s voice saying, “Just manage.”

When I was young, anytime we didn’t have something, new shoes, good food, or even medicine, we were told, “Just manage.”

That phrase became normal. It was how we coped. How we survived. But what we didn’t realize is that it also became a mindset. a mindset of settling, of shrinking our dreams to fit our reality.

Even today, I sometimes catch myself saying it: “Let me just manage.” But now I stop myself. Because I know that “managing” is just another way of saying, “I’ve accepted less than I deserve.”

Poverty trains you to be content with survival. But deep inside, you know you're meant for more. That whisper inside you? The one that says, “I can rise above this” that’s the real you.

“Excuses sound smart but they build nothing.”

In my village, there were always two kinds of people. The ones who made excuses, and the ones who made things happen. I remember a time when I was in school, and a lot of my classmates would say things like, “I didn’t have enough books,” or “The sun was too hot to focus.” But I would look around, and some of the same boys making excuses were the ones who were still ahead. they were getting better grades, they were excelling.

It took me a while to realize it, but that’s when I learned: excuses don’t change anything. People who make excuses are the same ones who stay stuck. It’s the ones who say, “I don’t have everything, but I’ll make do with what I’ve got,” who keep moving forward.

I’ve been there. I’ve made every excuse under the sun. But when I stopped blaming everything else and focused on what I could control, that’s when things started to shift.

Life doesn’t listen to your reasons. It listens to your results. You don’t need the perfect conditions to succeed. You just need to move, to start. If you keep waiting for everything to be perfect, you’ll never move forward.

Excuses don’t make you strong. Action does. Start taking action today, even if it’s just a small step. Results follow effort, not complaints.

“Most African men are trapped. Not by chains, but by their own minds.”

Let me take you back to when we were kids. Remember the toys we had? Our parents would buy them for us, but they weren’t really “ours.” Sure, they gave them to us, but there were always rules. “You can play, but first, you must do this... or that.” When we wanted to enjoy something, we had to wait for permission, to be good enough, to earn it, to show we deserved it. Over time, this belief that we had to “earn” our own joy seeped into our lives. Even now, as grown men, we’re still stuck in that cycle, waiting for permission from someone, somewhere. Waiting for someone to choose us, tell us we’re ready.

But here’s the painful truth, no one is coming to save us. The world doesn’t reward the soft, the obedient, or the patient. It rewards the men who take action, who claim their destiny with both hands and don’t wait for someone else to tell them they’re worthy. Respect, discipline, wealth, they all begin in your mind. You are the key to your own freedom, but first, you have to free yourself from those chains of self-doubt, fear, and waiting.

We were raised to be polite. To wait. To stay small. But if you want to rise above the noise, you need to break free from that mindset. It’s time to own your power. To stop waiting for someone else to give you permission to take control of your life. It starts now...in your mind.

Growth depends on environment. No matter how ambitious or motivated you are, if you're surrounded by people who waste time, mock discipline, and fear progress, your mindset will shrink.

Waste isn't just physical...it's mental and emotional. It’s endless gossip, procrastination, empty talk, and comfort in mediocrity. And when that becomes the culture around you, your potential begins to rot.

Just like a plant needs fertile soil, your mind needs fertile surroundings, people who challenge you, habits that push you, and silence that allows you to think.
