EVENING THOUGHT | Echoes of the Classroom

The most dangerous thing you can do to a nation is close the mind of its children.

You do not need bombs for that.

All you need is a classroom without a teacher. A school without books. A system that tells a child quietly, slowly, through neglect that they do not matter.

That is the violence no one talks about.

The silent violence of an empty desk. Of a fee that could not be paid. Of a brilliant child who stopped coming to school in Primary Four because life at home became heavier than the school bag on their back.

We mourn loudly when disaster strikes.

But we are silent when potential dies slowly in a classroom no one is paying attention to.

It is time to pay attention.

Every child that falls through the cracks of our education system is not a statistic. They are a doctor we will never have. A teacher we will never know. A solution to a problem that will now go unsolved.

Cameroon cannot afford to lose them.

And neither can you.

The Pride of Ada Part Two
That evening, she returned to the spirit world. As she remembered the insult and the pain she had endured, she wept. Her tears fell from the spirit world into the land of the living as heavy rain. All night long, the rain poured without mercy.
The next morning, Ada and her parents set out for their farm. The earth was still wet from the night’s storm. On their way, they reached a deep valley that separated two hills. The only way across was a narrow stick laid between the hills.
Carefully, Ada stepped onto the stick to cross. But the wood was slippery. In a moment of misfortune, she lost her balance and fell deep into the valley.
Her scream echoed through the hills.
Below, sharp broken bottles lay hidden. When she landed, they pierced her body. Her spine was shattered, and glass cut deeply into her head.
Villagers rushed to rescue her when her parents cried out for help. They carried her to a traditional healer, who tried everything possible to save her. Her beautiful hair had to be cut off to remove the pieces of glass tangled within it. The injuries were too severe.
In the end, Ada lost her sight.
She lost her ability to walk.
And the beauty she once took pride in faded away.
As she lay helpless, she remembered the words of the old granny at the market. Tears filled her eyes as regret consumed her heart. But it was too late.
Ada spent the rest of her life in suffering and misery, until the day she finally died.

Moral Lesson:

Pride goes before destruction. Beauty without humility can lead to downfall. Always show kindness and respect to everyone, no matter who they are.

The problem begins when society defines intelligence too narrowly. Schools often reward only those who excel in traditional academics. Parents then begin to compare their children with others:
“Why can’t you be like your sister?”
“Look at your friend, he always comes first!”
These comparisons slowly plant seeds of doubt in a child. Instead of nurturing their uniqueness, we push them into molds that were not designed for them.
As a parent, your first responsibility is to believe that your child is capable of greatness even before the world sees it. Your belief becomes the foundation of their confidence.
Children thrive in environments where they feel safe to explore, fail, and try again. When a child asks questions, don’t shut them down. When they make mistakes, don’t shame them. These are not signs of weakness they are signs of growth

Seeing Uniqueness Instead of Weakness

What many parents call “stubbornness” may actually be strong will.
What they call “talkative” may be communication skill.
What they call “restlessness” may be high energy and curiosity.
The problem is not always the behavior the problem is often the interpretation.
When you begin to look at your child differently, something powerful happens:
You stop focusing only on what is wrong
You begin to notice what is strong
You shift from criticism to discovery
And that is where growth begins.

TEACHERS, UPGRADE OR STEP ASIDE

No matter what subject you teach… no matter where you work… if you truly want to survive and grow in this profession, you must upgrade yourself.

If you know deep down that you don’t have full mastery of your subject, don’t just sit there—do something about it. Study. Practice. Learn. Or simply quit.

Yes, quit. Because if you stay without improving, the world of teaching will humiliate you in ways you can’t imagine. You will become a joke to school owners. They’ll delay your salary without apology, treat you like trash, trample on your rights, and still expect you to smile. You won’t be promoted. You won’t be respected. And you definitely won’t be paid well.

But when you know your stuff—when you become a master of your craft—you become a boss. And guess what? No school dares to mess with a boss. If they try to, you walk away and another school—one that values you—will open their doors and offer you more. Because excellence is attractive. Good market sells itself.

In fact, when you’re really good, you won’t need to beg. School owners will chase you—because they know what you bring to the table.

So please, stop complaining and start working on yourself. Learn new skills. Master technology. Develop your communication. Do everything you can to become better than you were last year.

Because here’s the truth: many teachers are stuck in toxic schools not because there are no better places—but because they simply can’t pass interviews elsewhere. And that’s why they endure suffering year after year.

So, I say this with all the love in my heart: If you cannot learn, if you cannot grow, if you cannot evolve—please quit teaching.

Because if you don’t, this profession will break you… silently and painfully.

"Dear private school teachers"

In Cameroon we are in the end of yet another academic year. Many schools will go on vacation this week and some early next week. Many of you have put in great work since September 2024.

As you go on vacation, many of you will not be paid in June, July and August. Many of you were only able to use your peanut salaries to pay rents, feed yourself and pay transport to and from school.

Many of you are ending the year with little or no savings because your salary cannot meet up with your daily expenses. Wether you are teaching in mission schools or lay private schools, the reality is the same.

Every end of of the academic year should push you into deeper reflections. Many of you are so comfortable. Many of you are afraid to take that step and venture into new things.

As teachers you can use this opportunity to learn some skills. Make good use of YouTube, Google, AI, chatGPT and other platforms to hone your skills.

For how long will you remain as a private school teacher? When will you concentrate on your cooking skills? When will you learn graphic design, web design, coding, programming, grant writing, project management? When will you start drop shipping, affiliate marketing, etc.

This is an era of opportunities. Many of you have wasted so many years already. Every holiday you organize holiday classes, go back o the village or just idle around.

There are so many free grants for startups. There are free programs to travel abroad with little or nothing. As long as you have a smart phone, as long as you can read and write, you are capable of doing something.

Let your challenges as a private sector teacher push you to working hard and smart in something better.
