Good morning dear people,

I have read with interest some genuine worries about people who won't let their children spend 3 years in university studying "History" for example because "It is a waste of time". Every parent wants his or her child to be a professional with practical skills as the world has changed.

I would take this chance to explain something to you. Firstly, I am a professionally trained teacher with over 10 years of work experience so better believe me and pay attention to what I am going to say.

The results of official exams are out. The kids are excited because they succeeded and are looking to the future with vigour. The world today has all these demands of having professional and technical skills so anyone can forge a way out for themselves but what we forget is that there is space for everyone to co-exist. In this light, every field in education is important and useful. Children are born different with different skills, interests and abilities thus they are meant for different paths. Let's take History, we are well aware one doesn't get into a field of study for fun. There must be clear goals. With a degree in History the following career opportunities are open: Archeology(Research in a specific field), Museology, Museum Curator, Archivists, Historians, Teachers, PR Managers, Genealogist, writer/editor, political scientist etc etc. When we look at History as merely studying the past, we lose site of these opportunities.

Children have different interests. Some will choose History or English or Geography as per their skills. Instead of forcing down their throat the issue or professionalism and technical skills, let them do what they love with guidance and then link up with other skills. It makes for what we describe in education lingua as "making the child allround".
That child whom you are forcing to be an electrician may become a major Political figure in future because of History.
It's not like we are in the 70s when we had to believe everything with little or no research. We have the internet at our disposal, we can research and guide our children to such career opportunities which will make them happy and successful.

Once a learner/student attains a certain level in the field of study, they person is a professional. Professional is not only in what we call describe as technical skills. This is why in economics, there are producers and consumers.
In case every child is guided to becoming a producer, who would be the consumer?
Think about it.

Every one can conviently co-exist in their separate fields. Let's not enslave our minds now and force a path on a child making them rich but miserable in future

These young ones need our honest guidance and we ought to lay out a realistic platform for them to thrive on. If the child wants his/her degree, let him or her walk the path. Opportunities come from many different places. Your child might miss an opportunity because you only wanted them to get a practical skill at a time when they needed something else. All can be achieved with proper guidance.

Guide and direct the children and watch them evolve into the best versions of themselves.
