THE REALMS OF THE SPIRIT
A DEEP THEOLOGICAL TEACHING ON THE INVISIBLE REALITY, SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT, AND THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER
By Bishop Dr. Erem Emmanuel Obi, PhDs
---
INTRODUCTION
Human beings live in a visible world, but Scripture teaches that reality is not limited to what the physical eye can see.
Paul declares:
«“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:18»
The Bible presents creation as having both a visible dimension and an invisible dimension. The physical world can be examined through the senses, while the spiritual realm belongs to the invisible order of God's creation.
However, the subject of spiritual realms must be approached with biblical theology rather than speculation.
The Christian is not called to become fascinated with mysterious experiences, angels, demons, visions, dreams, or supernatural manifestations. The Christian is called to know God, follow Christ, walk by the Spirit, understand Scripture, exercise discernment, and live under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
The spiritual realm is real, but Jesus Christ must remain at the center of our understanding of it.
---
1. WHAT IS THE SPIRITUAL REALM?
The spiritual realm refers broadly to the invisible dimension of created reality that Scripture presents as existing beyond ordinary physical perception.
Paul writes:
«“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible.”
— Colossians 1:16»
Notice the language:
Visible and invisible.
Christian theology therefore recognizes that God's creation is greater than what human beings can presently see.
Yet we must immediately establish an important theological boundary:
GOD ALONE IS THE CREATOR.
The spiritual realm is not a second independent universe competing with God.
God created both the visible and invisible orders.
Therefore:
The spiritual realm is created; God is Creator.
This distinction protects believers from turning spiritual beings, experiences, or manifestations into objects of worship.
---
2. GOD IS SPIRIT
Jesus said:
«“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
— John 4:24»
God is not merely a spiritual being among many spiritual beings.
He is the eternal, self-existent Creator.
Before creation existed, God existed.
Before angels existed, God existed.
Before humanity existed, God existed.
Before the visible universe existed, God existed.
God does not depend upon the spiritual realm.
Rather, the spiritual realm depends upon Him.
This is fundamental theology.
---
3. THE HEAVENLY REALM
Scripture repeatedly speaks about heaven as God's dwelling and throne.
Isaiah declares:
«“Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”
— Isaiah 66:1»
The Bible also speaks of the heavenly realm in relation to angels, God's glory, worship, and His divine government.
But heaven should not merely be understood geographically.
Theologically, heaven represents the transcendent sphere of God's glory and presence, although God cannot be confined to a location.
Solomon recognized this when he prayed:
«“Behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee.”
— 1 Kings 8:27»
God is greater than creation.
---
4. THE ANGELIC REALM
The Bible clearly teaches the existence of angels.
Hebrews describes angels as:
«“ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.”
— Hebrews 1:14»
Angels are created spiritual beings.
They are not gods.
They are not to be worshipped.
They are servants of God who operate according to God's purposes.
Revelation 22:8–9 demonstrates the danger of misdirected spiritual devotion when John attempted to worship an angel and was corrected.
The angel's message was essentially:
Worship God.
That principle remains essential today.
If a spiritual experience causes someone to become more fascinated with angels than with Jesus, something has gone wrong.
---
5. THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL OPPOSITION
Scripture also teaches the existence of rebellious spiritual beings.
Paul writes:
«“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:12»
This passage does not teach Christians to become obsessed with demons.
It teaches Christians to understand that spiritual opposition exists and therefore to stand in Christ.
Paul's answer to spiritual warfare is not fear.
His answer is:
Stand.
«“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth...”
— Ephesians 6:14»
The believer's strength is not curiosity about darkness.
The believer's strength is Christ.
---
6. THE KINGDOM OF DARKNESS IS NOT EQUAL TO GOD
One of the greatest theological errors is to imagine that God and Satan are equal opposing powers.
They are not.
God is the eternal Creator.
Satan is a created being.
God is sovereign.
Satan is limited.
God is omnipotent.
Satan is not.
God is omniscient.
Satan is not.
God is worthy of worship.
Satan is not.
Therefore Christianity is not a cosmic struggle between two equal gods.
The devil is ultimately a defeated enemy whose final judgment is revealed in Scripture.
Christ has authority over the powers of darkness.
Colossians 2:15 declares that Christ:
«“spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them.”»
The cross therefore stands at the center of spiritual victory.
---
7. THE REALM OF CHRIST'S AUTHORITY
Jesus Christ occupies the supreme position.
Paul declares:
«“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.”
— Philippians 2:9»
The believer does not enter spiritual warfare trying to manufacture authority.
The believer stands in the authority of Jesus Christ.
This is why Christian spiritual warfare is fundamentally Christological.
It is about Christ.
His cross.
His resurrection.
His lordship.
His victory.
His name.
His Word.
His kingdom.
---
8. THE BELIEVER'S UNION WITH CHRIST
One of the deepest truths concerning the spiritual life is that believers are united with Christ.
Paul says:
«“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
— Ephesians 2:6»
This does not mean that Christians physically leave the earth and enter another planet.
It describes a profound spiritual and positional reality.
The believer belongs to Christ.
The believer participates in Christ's life.
The believer's identity is transformed by union with Christ.
The believer therefore must stop defining himself exclusively by his earthly circumstances.
His ultimate identity is found in Christ.
---
9. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE SPIRITUAL LIFE
The Christian life is impossible without the Holy Spirit.
Paul teaches:
«“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
— Romans 8:14»
The Holy Spirit does not lead believers into confusion, spiritual pride, or occult fascination.
He glorifies Christ.
Jesus said:
«“He shall glorify me.”
— John 16:14»
This gives us a powerful test:
DOES AN EXPERIENCE GLORIFY CHRIST?
If something supposedly spiritual produces pride, manipulation, fear, greed, or obsession with supernatural phenomena while diminishing Jesus and Scripture, it must be examined carefully.
The Holy Spirit always works in harmony with God's revealed truth.
---
10. SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT
Not every supernatural claim is from God.
John gives believers a serious instruction:
«“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”
— 1 John 4:1»
This is the ministry of discernment.
Discernment means the ability to distinguish what is true from what is false and what is genuinely of God from what merely appears spiritual.
A person can have an emotional experience and call it spiritual.
A person can have a dream and assume it is prophetic.
A person can hear a voice and assume it is God.
But Christianity does not teach:
“If it feels supernatural, it must be God.”
Instead, Scripture commands believers to test.
---
11. SCRIPTURE MUST GOVERN SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE
Experiences must never become greater than Scripture.
The Bible is the authoritative standard by which Christian teaching and spiritual claims must be examined.
Isaiah asks:
«“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
— Isaiah 8:20»
Therefore:
Experience must submit to Scripture.
Prophecy must submit to Scripture.
Dreams must submit to Scripture.
Visions must submit to Scripture.
Manifestations must submit to Scripture.
No spiritual experience has authority to overturn the revealed Word of God.
---
12. DREAMS, VISIONS, AND PROPHECY
Scripture contains genuine dreams and visions.
God spoke through dreams in various biblical narratives.
God also used prophetic revelation.
However, this does not mean that every dream is divine revelation.
Ecclesiastes 5:3 recognizes that dreams can arise from the multitude of activities and concerns of life.
Therefore believers should exercise wisdom.
A dream should not automatically become doctrine.
A vision should not automatically become prophecy.
A supernatural claim should not automatically become God's command.
The mature believer asks:
Does this agree with Scripture?
Does it exalt Christ?
Does it produce godly fruit?
Can it withstand spiritual discernment?
---
13. THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL PRIDE
Spiritual experiences can become dangerous when they produce pride.
Paul warns in Colossians 2:18 about people becoming inflated through supposed spiritual experiences.
The greatest evidence of spiritual maturity is not how many visions someone claims to have.
It is Christlike character.
Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit:
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Longsuffering
- Gentleness
- Goodness
- Faith
- Meekness
- Temperance
A person can speak about spiritual realms for hours and still fail to demonstrate spiritual maturity.
The Spirit of God does not merely give experiences.
He produces transformation.
---
14. THE SPIRITUAL REALM AND PRAYER
Prayer is one of the primary ways believers participate in communion with God.
Prayer is not manipulation of spiritual forces.
Prayer is not a technique for controlling God.
Prayer is fellowship with the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray:
«“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.”
— Matthew 6:9–10»
Notice the priority:
God's name.
God's kingdom.
God's will.
Biblical prayer is therefore fundamentally God-centered, not self-centered.
---
15. FASTING AND THE SPIRITUAL LIFE
Fasting has an important place in Christian spirituality.
Jesus Himself fasted.
The early church fasted and prayed.
But fasting is not a magical mechanism for forcing God to act.
Fasting does not purchase spiritual power.
Fasting does not make someone superior to other Christians.
Biblically understood, fasting can help believers devote themselves to God, humble themselves, seek His will, and intensify their prayerful dependence upon Him.
The power belongs to God.
---
16. SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Ephesians 6:10–18 provides one of the clearest theological frameworks for spiritual warfare.
Paul identifies:
TRUTH
RIGHTEOUSNESS
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE
FAITH
SALVATION
THE WORD OF GOD
PRAYER
This is remarkably important.
Paul does not tell the believer to spend his life looking for demons.
He tells the believer to put on the whole armor of God.
The believer fights from a position of dependence upon God.
---
17. THE WORD OF GOD AS THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
Paul calls the Word of God:
«“the sword of the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 6:17»
Jesus demonstrated this during His temptation.
When Satan tempted Him, Jesus repeatedly answered with Scripture:
«“It is written...”»
This gives us a profound principle:
THE MATURE SPIRITUAL PERSON IS A WORD-GOVERNED PERSON.
Spiritual authority without biblical knowledge can become dangerous.
Zeal without knowledge can produce error.
Experience without discernment can produce deception.
Therefore the Church must teach believers to know the Word.
---
18. THERE ARE THINGS GOD HAS NOT REVEALED
One mark of theological maturity is knowing the difference between revelation and speculation.
Deuteronomy 29:29 says:
«“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us.”»
There are mysteries that belong to God.
We must not pretend to know everything about the invisible world.
Where Scripture speaks, we speak carefully.
Where Scripture is silent, we should remain humble.
This protects the Church from creating doctrines out of imagination.
---
19. THE SPIRITUAL REALM IS NOT A PLAYGROUND FOR CURIOSITY
Christians should never pursue occult practices, divination, necromancy, spirit consultation, or attempts to manipulate supernatural forces.
Scripture repeatedly condemns such practices.
The Christian does not need forbidden spiritual knowledge.
Why?
Because we have something infinitely greater:
Jesus Christ.
We do not need to consult the dead.
We belong to the living God.
We do not need occult revelation.
We have God's Word.
We do not need to seek power from darkness.
We receive the Holy Spirit.
---
20. THE GREATEST REALM IS THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST
Ultimately, the Christian's deepest concern should not be:
“How many spiritual realms can I enter?”
The greater question is:
“IS JESUS CHRIST LORD OVER MY LIFE?”
The purpose of spiritual theology is not to make believers fascinated with invisible beings.
It is to make believers faithful to God.
Christ must be greater than our experiences.
Christ must be greater than our revelations.
Christ must be greater than our titles.
Christ must be greater than our ministries.
Christ must be greater than our spiritual gifts.
Christ must be greater than everything.
---
21. THE CHURCH MUST RECOVER SPIRITUAL DEPTH
The modern Church needs spiritually mature believers.
We need ministers who know Scripture.
We need leaders who understand prayer.
We need believers who understand discernment.
We need Christians who can recognize deception.
We need servants of God who can walk in spiritual authority without becoming spiritually arrogant.
We need supernatural Christianity that remains biblical Christianity.
The answer is not to reject the supernatural.
The answer is to place the supernatural under biblical truth and the lordship of Christ.
---
22. THE HIGHEST PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY
Spiritual maturity is ultimately measured by conformity to Christ.
Paul says:
«“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”
— Ephesians 4:13»
The destination is not merely spiritual experiences.
The destination is Christlikeness.
We are called to know Christ.
To love Christ.
To obey Christ.
To proclaim Christ.
To represent Christ.
And finally to be transformed into His likeness.
---
CONCLUSION
The realms of the spirit are not a subject that should produce fear in the child of God.
Neither should they become a playground for speculation.
Scripture teaches that there is an invisible dimension of creation, that God created visible and invisible things, that angels exist, that spiritual opposition exists, and that the Holy Spirit works in believers.
But above every spiritual reality stands Jesus Christ.
He is Lord.
He is Savior.
He is King.
He is Creator.
He is victorious.
He is the center of Christian revelation.
Therefore, the spiritually mature believer does not chase the realm.
HE CHASES GOD.
He does not worship angels.
HE WORSHIPS GOD.
He does not fear darkness.
HE TRUSTS CHRIST.
He does not build doctrine upon experiences.
HE STANDS UPON SCRIPTURE.
He does not seek spiritual power for personal glory.
HE SEEKS GOD'S GLORY.
And he does not merely desire to experience the supernatural.
HE DESIRES TO BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS.
---
DECLARATION OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY
I belong to Jesus Christ.
My life is under His lordship.
I will not be governed by fear.
I will not be controlled by spiritual deception.
I will test all things according to the Word of God.
I will walk in the Holy Spirit.
I will pursue holiness.
I will grow in discernment.
I will stand in the victory of Christ.
I will not worship created beings.
I will worship the Creator.
I will not seek darkness.
I will walk in the light.
I will not exalt spiritual experiences above Scripture.
I will exalt Jesus Christ above everything.
For Christ is Lord over the visible and the invisible, and His kingdom shall have no end.
AMEN.
