Student project at ETH Zürich. We are improving a 3D printing machine for composite materials

3DCarb.ethz.ch Our goal is to develop a better process.

The demand on lighter and more stable structure in aerospace and other sectors has lead to the effect, that two research-fields made a big progress. On the one hand, fiber-reinforced materials or composite materials are used increasingly in lightweight structures. This kind of material has a high stiffness compared to its weight. On the other hand, additive manufacturing, mostly known as 3D printi

Here it is: Our Apium PEEK 3D Printer! We are very excited to integrate it into our system!

The technical drawings of our first iteration have left our lab and have been sent to our manufacturers! We have successfully accomplished our first milestone.

At this point we would like to thank our manufacturing partners REWaG AG, Argotec AG and Pavese AG as well as our cartridge heater supplier Moesch AG for their great financial and consultative support. A big thank you also goes to Luxion KeyShot for their rendering software support.

The new pultrusion unit stands out due to its adaptable nozzle. We can now adjust the temperature gradient inside the nozzle to a much higher accuracy. This flexibility makes it possible for us to produce qualitative Carbon fiber reinforced PEEK rods at different conveying speeds.

We are now looking forward to further improving our system in the next iteration and putting it into operation soon.

Yesterday we presented our result from almost one year of work at the Focus Roll-Out at ETH Zürich. We were impressed by the interest shown for our project and want to thank you all for coming.

For everybody who couldn't make it to the presentation, here is a video which gives you some impressions about our achievements. You can find out more about us on www.3dcarb.ethz.ch.

In the meantime, the second semester of our project has started. Most of the parts were produced and delivered and we have started to assemble the printer. In the next weeks, we will finally be able to start producing and to test the new materials. We are looking forward to it!

We also want to say thanks to our production partners - libs, LW Basel, Pavese AG, Tecnopinz, REWaG. Without their help our project would not have been possible!
