New week, new for you to stay up-to-date on what is happening around sustainability across the world.

💡News of the Week
1. A closer look at the data suggests that the impact of the measurement and reporting movement has been oversold. According to an article, during the 20-year period of increased reporting and sustainable investing, carbon emissions have continued to rise, and environmental damage has accelerated. A sustainable system will ultimately require a paradigm shift from the prevailing goal of wealth creation to one of well-being, and a shift in focus away from GDP and toward something akin to the OECD’s Better Life Index.

2. Which Countries Pollute the Most Ocean Plastic Waste? From the millions of metric tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year only the half is recycled, incinerated, or discarded into landfills, a significant portion of what remains eventually ends up in our oceans.

3. Many universities, starting with the renouned ones, are investing in climate focused business education (i.e. Stanford gets a gift of $1.1 billion from John Doerr, Harvard recieves a donation of $200 million from the Salata family to create an Institute for Climate and Sustainability.) The climate crisis, along with other global social and environmental issues (global health crises, environmental justice, culture wars), are demonstrating just how vulnerable companies are to external shocks and how urgently leaders must rise to new challenges.

💡News of the Week
1. Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s Four Corners just aired a special on the issue of carbon colonialism. In the race to curb catastrophic climate change, prominent Australian businesses have been enthusiastic customers of carbon credits. They've been offsetting their emissions by buying credits from companies promising to stop exploitative timber harvesting, whilst lifting locals out of poverty.

2. Fighting Climate Change Was Costly. Now It’s Profitable. The Inflation Reduction Act—with its $374 billion of green incentives, subsidies, and grants—was designed to entice private companies to invest in the transition away from fossil fuels.

3. World Bank chief resigns after climate stance misstep. Malpass’s departure comes just months after he was forced to push back against claims he was a climate crisis denier. The controversy started after he appeared on a climate finance panel at a conference in New York in September. Asked repeatedly whether he believed “manmade burning of fossil fuels …[are] rapidly and dangerously warming the planet”, Malpass tried to dodge the question before saying: “I don’t even know. I’m not a scientist.”

OECD countries have fallen short on that paltry promise of funds every year."
