Prof. Dr. Ying Zhang, President of the Singularity Academy, analyzed and reflected on issues of widespread concern in an interview with Singularity Academic Channel.
1. How should those with high academic qualifications and overseas study backgrounds cope if they can't find a job?
2. In the information age, as knowledge acquisition becomes increasingly convenient, does a degree obtained with high tuition fees still hold meaning?
3. What is the direction of strategic adjustments for large European companies?

🌍 Transforming Sustainable Development: A Cross-Continental Partnership 🤝
🔹 Following the signing of a MoU with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and the Bhutanese Embassy in Switzerland during the 2025 Davos World Economic Forum. From April 10-20, a delegation from the Singularity Academy, led by Prof. Dr. ir. Ying Zhang and Dr. iur. Urs Lustenberger, undertook a landmark mission to Bhutan. This visit not only deepened bilateral relations but also established novel standards for sustainable development through creative initiatives and strategic collaborations.
Our core accomplishments:
✅ Healthcare & Wellbeing: Traditional Tibetan medicine is being integrated with German medical technology and Swiss academic knowledge. This strategic integration also facilitates the development of mental health programs that align with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) objectives, with the aim of promoting the overall well - being of the population.
✅ Clean Energy Advancements: Identifying pathways for hydrogen mobility and green hydrogen production, leveraging Bhutan’s abundant hydropower resources.
✅ Educational Collaboration: Customizing courses for eco-tourism and business law, fostering academic exchanges and talent development.
✅ Sustainable Tourism: Crafting strategies to preserve Bhutan’s cultural heritage while developing high-value tourism experiences.
✅ Timber Engineering & Sustainable Construction: Pioneering sustainable wood engineering for buildings and driving eco-friendly urban and transport development.
In this trip, Häring AG as the representative of Swiss Timber Industry joined the visit.
🇨🇭🇧🇹 This isn’t just a partnership—it’s a revolution in sustainable collaboration. With a focus on localized solutions and shared knowledge, we’re turning Bhutan’s unique resources into global sustainability models.

🌍 Asia’s Rise Isn’t Quiet—It’s Loud and Changing Your World
🔹 Asia isn’t just “growing”—it’s rewriting how the global game works. The recent publication, The Transformation of Asia and Its Global Impact, Dr. iur. Urs Lustenberger and Prof. Dr. ir. Ying Zhang (April 6, 2025) developed to contribute to the (SwissCham Asia’s Partner). Its purpose is to provide an overview of transformative Asia and, particularly, some advice to the South Asia region, such as Pakistan.
🔹 Think Japan and South Korea rising from post-war rubble to tech giants. Now, China’s infrastructure chess moves, and India’s code-forging workforce are writing the next chapter. Asia’s not a monolith. While tariffs and geopolitical poker games rattle the West, countries like Pakistan sit at a crossroads—waiting, watching, and quietly building bridges.
🔹 Tech? Asia’s not just adopting it—they’re remixing it. From Shenzhen’s AI labs to India’s outsourcing empires, imitation turned to innovation. And let’s not forget K-pop diplomacy or lunar landers—soft power with a side of rockets.
🔹 But it’s not all shiny gadgets and GDP charts. Inequality, climate risks, and Trump’s Reciprocal Tariffs threaten to derail progress. For Pakistan (and the rest of us), the lesson’s clear: bet on education, green energy, and regional teamwork.

📈 Trump's Tariffs Shake World Markets: What's Next for Global Trade?
The world just got whiplash. Trump’s tariffs slammed into global markets like a wrecking ball, sending stocks tumbling and leaving supply chains scrambling for cover. But while everyone’s watching the chaos unfold, Asia’s been quietly rewriting the playbook.
📄 Prof. Dr. ir. Ying Zhang and Dr. iur. Urs Lustenberger laid out what’s really happening in their sharp analysis, Navigating Disruption: Asia’s Adaptive Path in the Post-Tariff Landscape (April 5, 2025). Their take? These tariffs are backfiring spectacularly. Instead of crumbling under pressure, Asia’s pulling its economies tighter together – through RCEP trade deals, homegrown tech hubs, and supply chains that increasingly answer to only themselves.
🤝 Europe’s starting to play along. As trade winds shift, old alliances are bending, and new ones are forming around everything from chip manufacturing to clean energy. The very policies meant to put America first might just end up leaving it on the sidelines.
At Singularity Academy, we’re watching this unfold in real time. Because in this new economic era, the winners won’t be those who just survive the chaos – but those who learn to steer it.

🚗⚡ Europe’s EV Crossroads: Strategic Lessons from the Frontlines of Innovation 🌍
Singularity Academy’s latest Frontier Review article by Prof. Dr. ir. Ying Zhang and Dr. iur. Urs Lustenberger analyses the European automotive industry’s fight to balance protectionism and innovation amid China’s EV dominance.
📉 The Stakes for Europe
The EU automotive sector--7% of GDP, 14M jobs—faces unprecedented pressure from Chinese EVs that are 30–50% cheaper, thanks to:
- Battery costs: $98/kWh (China) vs. $120–135/kWh (EU).
- Labor and automation: $6/hour wages + fully robotic factories (China) vs. $35/hour + partial automation (EU).
- State-led scale: China’s vertical integration (e.g., BYD’s Blade Battery) vs. Europe’s reliance on imported components (80% from Asia).
🔍 Key Insights from the Study
1️⃣ ’s Pitfalls:
- The EU’s tariffs and regulations (e.g., Anti-Subsidy Investigation, Battery Regulation) risk mirroring the U.S. auto industry’s 1980s stagnation, where shielding domestic players bred complacency.
- Lesson: Japan bypassed U.S. tariffs by localising production. China could do the same, using Europe as a manufacturing hub.
2️⃣ Tech Divergence:
- China: Leads in AI-driven automation (e.g., NIO’s predictive sensors) and rapid innovation cycles.
- Europe: Strengths in ethical AI (e.g., Mercedes’ Level 3 autonomy) but slower deployment due to strict regulations.
3️⃣ Consumer Cost Crisis:
- Europe’s EVs have a 5-year TCO of €45,000 (e.g., VW ID.3) vs. China’s $15,000 (e.g., BYD Seagull), risking a slower green transition.
🛠️ The Article’s Strategic Blueprint
To avoid stagnation, the study urges Europe to:
1️⃣ Collaborate Strategically:
- Joint ventures (e.g., CATL’s German gigafactories) to integrate Chinese tech while safeguarding IP.
- Shared R&D on solid-state batteries and AI-driven safety systems.
2️⃣ Invest in Homegrown Innovation:
- Boost EU-funded R&D to compete in AI and battery tech.
- Fast-track the European Battery Alliance (25% global production by 2030).
3️⃣ Diversify Supply Chains:
- Partner with Australia, Canada, and Africa for critical minerals.
- Leverage recycling mandates (EU Battery Regulation) to cut import reliance.
4️⃣ Balance Regulation and Agility:
- Streamline AI/autonomy approvals without compromising ethics.
- Use tariffs conditionally (e.g., tied to local R&D investments).
🗣️ Quote from the Study
“Protectionism may offer short-term security, but Europe’s future leadership hinges on balancing open markets, strategic innovation, and resilient supply chains” — Zhang & Lustenberger (2025)
