Was America
30.05.2026 - 25.10.2026
Opening Saturday 30 May from 11 am to 6 pm
Special opening Sunday 31 May from 2 to 6 pm

The twenty-sixth exhibition organized by the Fondazione Rolla at its own venue Kindergarten in Bruzella consists of forty-two works from Philip and Rosella Rolla’s private collection.

The exhibition Was America is inspired by a conversation between the collectors Philip and Rosella Rolla and the curator Francesco Zanot. Based on a reflection on the current socioeconomic situation in the United States (Philip Rolla is a native of California) a careful selection has been made from the works in the collection focusing on what the American middle class was and what it represented from the 1930s to the late twentieth century.

The works on display, differing greatly in terms of character and subject, aim to evoke the memory of what America was, not in terms of details or figures, but simply in regard to the atmosphere that existed at the time, without offering sociopolitical opinions.

Authors: Richard Avedon, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Margaret Bourke-White, Josef Breitenbach, Phil Davis, Maureen Gallace, Frank Gohlke, Anthony Linck, Philip Rolla, Fabio Tasca, Edward Weston and three Anonymous.

The catalog includes a text by Francesco Zanot.

Become a Friend of the Rolla Foundation

Inspired by events organized by other institutions and by friends who visited us, after more than fifteen years of exhibitions at the Rolla.info – kindergarten space, Rosella and Philip Rolla decided to open the doors of their home through exclusive initiatives dedicated to Friends of the Rolla Foundation. Friends will be able to support our activities and initiatives and participate in dedicated events, such as private visits to the collection, archives, and library.

Sunday March 22 at 5 p.m., concert by Claudio Farinone in tribute to Ralph Towner.

Free admission, limited seating by reservation at [email protected]

Two months after the death of the great American musician, Claudio Farinone will perform a selection of compositions on guitar and baritone guitar that recount his artistic career.

Claudio Farinone, classical guitarist and composer, after graduating from the Conservatory, numerous masterclasses, seminars in interpretation and composition, and awards at international competitions, began a concert career as a soloist and in various ensembles, playing with some of the leading Italian and Swiss exponents of jazz and world music. His language is halfway between interpretations, improvisational paths, and original compositions.
In 2013, he released the CD Claudio Farinone plays Ralph Towner, dedicated to the famous American guitarist and composer with whom he performed a duet in 2017 at the Museo Vela in Ligornetto.

Ralph Towner (Chehalis (WA-USA) 1.03.1940 – Rome, January 18, 2026), American guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, one of the most important of our era. He is best known for his work in contemporary jazz and acoustic music, where he has combined elements of jazz, classical music, and world music. He was one of the founders of the legendary world-jazz group “Oregon.”

“In 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, in France, Belgium, and Italy I photographed a number of ‘living walls’ that had not been tended to. I also took pictures of a series of situations that were bizarre in terms of their shape, as well as disturbing, where the plant life had altered the apparent equilibrium between nature, culture and habitat.” Pino Musi

Phytostopia is the twenty-fourth Rolla Foundation exhibition.
The eleven works exhibited are from the Pino Musi archive and the private collection of Philip and Rosella Rolla.

In the catalog an essay by Michael Jakob and a short text by Pino Musi.
