Next we moved on to Jerusalem, where we studied Ezra and Nehemiah. We saw the remains of the temple wall built during Ezra, as well as Mt. of Olives, Gethsemane and Jesus’ tomb. On a day trip outside the city we visited the Sea of Galilee, Mt. of Beatitudes and Capernaum, where Jesus performed many miracles. Learning about present day Jerusalem and the Jewish culture was a highlight for many of us.

While in Egypt we studied Exodus and learned about God leading the people of Israel out of Egypt. We also visited the pyramids, took a boat trip on the Nile, rode camels in the desert, swam in the Red Sea and climbed Mt. Sinai to see the sunrise. Seeing the Nile that was turned to blood during the plagues and standing on the mountain where Moses received the law was an incredible way to start off our travel phase.

Hi everyone! Our apologies for the lack of updates over the past few weeks. We have been in the on-location phase of the BCC for three and a half weeks now and between studying and exploring each new place there has been little time for much else. We have had wonderful adventures exploring God’s word in both Egypt and Israel and are excited to continue on and experience even more in the last half of the school.

This week we studied the books of Hebrews and Haggai. During class time we had question and answer sessions that allowed us to explore and challenge ourselves with different perspectives. Our speaker knew Hebrew and Greek and it was interesting to hear parts of the books in their original language. We're also making final travel preparations and we're looking forward to leaving on location very soon!

Between all of the teaching and studying, it's been amazing to get to know each other better and after only two weeks into the school it already feels like we’ve been together for a much longer time. We’re very excited for the upcoming months of exploring more of the Bible and in a few short weeks, traveling to new locations and seeing many of the places we’re studying. Be sure to check back for more updates!

This week we continued with our work by looking at the gospels, studying the book of Mark in detail. Our speaker for the week led us through an overview of the gospels while encouraging us to consider the differences between how the story of Jesus’ life was told in each one. It was interesting to consider the finer points that are often overlooked and to be able to take extra time to dig deeper into the book of Mark.

Last week we were introduced to the inductive study method and studied the book of Philemon as we did so. We are already learning that the historical setting and culture are very important to understanding the context and actual meaning of the text. We have been challenged to think as the writers would have thought and to read the text as the audience of the time would have understood it.
