🇫🇷 **Depuis, pendant or il y a?**

These three expressions refer to time, but they are used differently:

🔹 **DEPUIS** — an action or situation started in the past and is still continuing
*J’habite* (**présent**) *en France depuis trois ans.*
I have been living in France for three years.

🔹 **PENDANT** — the duration of a completed action or situation
*J’ai travaillé* (**passé composé**) *à Bruxelles pendant deux ans.*
I worked in Brussels for two years.

🔹 **IL Y A** — indicates how much time has passed since an event occurred
*J’ai commencé* (**passé composé**) *mon nouveau travail il y a six mois.*
I started my new job six months ago.

Your turn! Can you write a sentence about yourself using **depuis**, **pendant** or **il y a**? 🙂

**French tip for English speakers**
**“It’s the same” ≠ “C’est la même”**
In French, we usually don’t say:
❌ **C’est la même.**
It sounds incomplete.
Instead, say:
✅ **C’est la même chose.**
or, in everyday French:
✅ **C’est pareil.**
Example:
**For me, it’s the same.**
✅ **Pour moi, c’est pareil.**
Small details make your French sound much more natural.

🇨🇭 French tip of the day: “I miss you”

In French, we don’t say *“Je manque toi.”*

We say:

➡️ **Tu me manques.**

This structure is the opposite of English.

In English, the person who feels the absence is the subject:

➡️ **I miss you.**

In French, the person you miss is the subject:

➡️ **Tu me manques.**
Literally: “You are missing to me.”

A few examples:

* **Tu me manques.** = I miss you.
* **Vous me manquez.** = I miss you. / I miss you all.
* **Paris me manque.** = I miss Paris.
* **Mes amis me manquent.** = I miss my friends.

This structure can feel strange at first, but it is very common in everyday French.

Learning French is not only about vocabulary — it is also about understanding how the language “thinks”. 😊

Not sure what to reply to ‘Avec ceci ?’ in a shop?
Bonjour à tous 🙂
In shops in Switzerland, you’ll often hear:
👉 “Avec ceci ?”
👉 Important point:
You don’t answer “oui”.
✔️ If you want something else:
👉 just continue your order
“Je voudrais aussi…”
✔️ If you don’t want anything more:
👉 “Ça sera tout, merci”
👉 “C’est tout, merci”
👉 In real life, people usually continue their sentence rather than answering yes or no.
These small details make everyday interactions much smoother 🙂

Bonjour à tous ! In French, when someone asks"comment ça va?" or “Ça va ?”, there's a slight difference between the two questions. Do you undestand this difference and what do you usually answer?
– Ça va
– Ça va bien
– Bien, et toi ?
– Comme ci, comme ça
– Pas trop mal (not too bad)
Many learners think “comme ci, comme ça” is very French — and it is…but it’s actually less common in real conversations than people expect.
What do you hear or use most often?

🇫🇷 BONJOUR vs BONNE JOURNÉE - What's the difference?
Many people get confused! Here's when to use each:
**BONJOUR** = Hello (when ARRIVING or GREETING)
👉 When entering a shop, meeting someone
**BONNE JOURNÉE** = Have a nice day (when LEAVING)
👉 When leaving a shop, ending a conversation
**Same pattern for evening:**
🌆 **BONSOIR** = Good evening (arriving/greeting)
🌙 **BONNE SOIRÉE** = Have a nice evening (leaving)
💡 **Pro tip:** Think of it like "Hello" vs "Goodbye" in English!
**Bonus:** You'll rarely hear "Bonne matinée" - just use "Bonne journée" all day! ☀️

To tip or not to tip in Switzerland or France?– that is the question!
You’re at a café and wonder if you should leave something.
You’re at a restaurant and see “service compris” on the bill.
What do we French people do?
Café: 4,50 CHF→ we round up to 5 CHF (20–30 cents is perfect)
Restaurant: we leave 5–10 %, even with service compris
- It’s a tradition, an unspoken rule
-Tipping isn’t required, but it’s very appreciated
- You’ll feel the difference when you come back!
If not satisfied at all, leave nothing (P.S. The waiter isn’t responsible for the food!)
