I have created this group because I found unfair that Israeli scholars were banned from publication and participation to international academic programs on political basis. This was unfair because these academics do not necessarily support their country’s policies and are even often at the forefront of the recognition that the politics of settlement outside the internationally recognized territory of Israel is insane.
In all fairness I was appalled by the tragedy of October 7th and took my distance from anyone blindly applauding it. I still strongly oppose the captivity of innocents in Gaza.
This, however, doesn’t mean that I don’t care or support the just cause of the two States solution. I have friends in both opposite camps # and receive nasty blows from people supporting them, although when it comes to real help such as saving innocent lives, the loud voices become strangely silent.
As the founder of Academy Sans Frontières, a deliberately informal group of decent academics with wider perspectives, I simply suggest you to read this paper and help bridge the insane gap within the academic community. A true academic supports any colleague anywhere if we aim to restore the universality of university, our aim here at ASF.
Speak up if you can do so. Remind your circles that these are not time for hatred but for individual solidarity between likeminded colleagues.
