Through the Shipping and Commodity Academy, I get a lot of questions from young people starting out in life:

Go where the interesting people are.
Your proximity to people who are better than you is everything.
Optimize for what you'll know in five years, not what you'll bank this year.

Don't listen to your parents (unless they're bankrolling you. Then you're still a kid, and you listen).
They grew up under different rules (different economy, different jobs, different risks, etc...) Their advice is calibrated for a world that no longer exists.

Be in the office.
You are not an AI agent.
Remote works when you already know what you're doing.
It's terrible when you don't. Humans learn by proximity.

Be courageous.

"Trade finance" is one of those words that means everything and nothing.

The banker meant a letter of credit.
The trader meant cash to buy a cargo.
The fintech founder meant invoice discounting.
The investor meant a private credit fund.

All correct, but not the same.

Three jobs: payment security, liquidity, risk transfer.

Things that secure payment:
Letters of credit, documentary collections, bank guarantees.

Things that actually fund the trade:
Transactional loan, borrowing base, warehouse finance.

Things that move risk off your book:
Receivables discounting, factoring, credit insurance, etc...

The confusion starts when people package all three into one word.

No?

Trade finance doesn't price risk.

It prices the deviation from a vanilla situation.

Wrong commodity? Premium.
Wrong jurisdiction? Premium.
Wrong offtaker? Premium.

Three non-vanilla attributes, and (if you are not financed), you pay 3X the cost.

If you think about it, you're paying up not because of the risk,

but because nobody wants to spend an hour understanding it.

No?

From 16 to 26 I read a book a week.

A book was always within reach and it never felt like discipline.

Then the last ten years happened and I read almost nothing.

I told myself it was the businesses, the travel, the kids' schedules...

That was a lie I found comfortable.

Then I decided to start reading again and it was scary...

It was catching myself reading the same paragraph three times, because my hand kept reaching for a screen that wasn't even ringing.

So I'm forcing it.

A book a month by year's end,

Not for the count but for getting my head back.

Animals are actually smarter than us about hierarchy.

They don't promote the one who can't do the job as leader.

I went to Dubai in May, the plane was 2/3 empty.

Just flew there this week. the plane was FULL.

Something shifted in the last few months and I can't fully explain it.

I've been running an academy that teaches physical commodity trading (for more than 7 years) The Shipping and Commodity Academy.))

Not a glamorous product: contracts, Incoterms, logistics, financing, how a trade actually clears.

The people signing up have changed; they're getting younger.

Two, three years ago, the ambitious 22-year-old wanted to build an app.
A SaaS. A marketplace. Something with a landing page and a waitlist.

Now I've got people still in university — some of them barely out of school — asking how to move 5,000 tonnes of urea from the Gulf to West Africa.

Is this AI indigestion?

Maybe. If a model can write your code, design your logo, draft your pitch deck, and answer your customer emails, then "I'm building software" stops feeling like a moat. It feels like a commodity, and a crowded one.

The physical world is stubborn.
It resists abstraction.
That may be exactly why it's suddenly attractive.

Or maybe it's a simpler reason: a generation watched the entry-level white-collar ladder get pulled up and went looking for work that still needs a human standing there.

I don't know what it means yet.

Anyone else seeing this?

Millennials are cooked.

Go down the list of places a normal person is told to put money.

Equities: all-time highs, in the middle of a war. The S&P keeps printing records.

Gov bonds: you really think we are going into negative territory again?

Private credit: Defaults climbing, redemptions tightening, regulators finally asking who's holding what.

Real estate: priced out. In every mature market, a millennial buying a first home needs family money or a decade of savings they don't have.

Gold: Near record highs. Like the S&P 500... wired?

Pensions: a promise made by demographics that no longer exist.

So, I only see one solution

Commodity trade finance.

(And I'm not biased)
