Books, projects… and climbing. 🧗

Even during exam periods, Merijn always makes time to go climbing.

"I always make sure to climb at least twice a week."

Keeping a healthy balance between studying and your hobbies is just as important as passing exams.

Post 4 – Switzerland through an exchange student's eyes 🇨🇭

Why choose Switzerland?

For Merijn, the answer is simple:

🏔️ The mountains.
🌊 The lakes.
🌿 Nature.

One of his personal highlights was climbing in the Swiss Alps with someone he met during his semester.

Living abroad also means discovering a country far beyond the lecture halls.

Post 3 – Finding Friends 🤝

Moving abroad means starting from scratch.

"The first weeks were quite hard," says Merijn. New courses, a new rhythm, a different language…

But after about a month, everything changed.

He found friends, spent time outside university, played beach volleyball and even joined climbing trips.

"Take your time to get a rhythm of life. Everything is gonna be alright."

Sometimes the best friendships begin outside the classroom. 🤝

Post 2 – From Engineering to Engineering ⚙️

Engineering doesn't stop at the classroom. ⚙️🚀

Back home, Merijn studies Mechanical Engineering at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. Besides university, he enjoys working on engineering projects and spending time climbing.

At BFH, he discovered completely new topics such as robotics and rehabilitation technologies.

"Once I understood the programming, robotics became really fun."

Learning something completely new can be challenging—but that's exactly what makes an exchange semester so rewarding.

Post 1 - Meet Merijn! 👋

Merijn is a Mechanical Engineering student from the Netherlands who is currently spending his exchange semester at BFH in Biel.

He originally planned to study in Austria, but Switzerland became his second choice – and today he says:

"I really like Biel, the lake and the mountains. It's way better than the Netherlands." 🏔️

Studying abroad isn't only about earning credits. It's about discovering new places, new people and new perspectives.
