🧠 AGRINERDS DID YOU KNOW? | Harvest Timing is Everything! 🧠
Ever wondered why some harvests fetch a better price than others? It all comes down to understanding MATURITY. In Horticulture, "mature" has two different meanings, and knowing the difference is key to being an Elite Farmer. 👨🌾👩🌾
📍 1. Physiological Maturity (The Biology) 🧬
This is when the plant organ has completed all its growth phases. It's "grown up." After this, ripening begins, followed by senescence (when the crop starts to break down).
Example: A tomato that has reached its full size and is ready to turn red.
📍 2. Horticultural/Commercial Maturity (The Business) 💰
This is the "Sweet Spot." It’s the stage where the produce has the best quality for your market or consumer. Often, this happens before the plant is biologically finished!
Example: We harvest cucumbers, okra, and green peas while they are still "young" because that’s how customers want them. If we waited for biological maturity, they would be too tough to eat!
The AgriNerd Lesson: Don't just wait for a crop to look "done." Harvest when the quality meets your market’s demand to reduce waste and maximize profit! 📈
