Mind Your Grammar Series

1. If “that” or “who” comes after a noun or a pronoun, the choice of verb should be determined by the noun or the pronoun, either based on number or grammar (depending on the pronoun used).

Examples:
A. You that IS here should register your presence. ❎
B. You that ARE here should register your presence. ✅
C. I am talking to you who IS a student. ❎
D. I am talking to you who ARE a student. ✅
E. He who jettisoned his family NEEDS to retrace his steps. ✅

2. Two determiners should not be placed side-by-side (or together) in a sentence; use demonstrative determiner + noun + of + possessive determiner.

Examples:
A. Those flowers of ours are very beautiful. ✅ (UTME 2014, Que. 76)
B. That your house is modern. ❎
C. That house of yours is modern. ✅

3. A present tense main verb should come after a past tense auxiliary verb. If there is no past tense auxiliary verb in the sentence, change the present tense main verb to past tense main verb.

Examples:
A. I DID GO to school every day when I was in Ibadan. ✅ (UTME 2021, Que. 50)
B. We DID SPOKE to him about the matter, but he didn’t listen. ❎
C. We SPOKE to him about the matter, but he didn’t listen. ✅

- Figures of Speech

Also, it simplifies the content of each topic to students and candidates, thereby making understanding the topics an effortless and interesting activity.

Interestingly, apart from the Year 12 students who will derive immense benefits from this book in preparation for their WASSCE and NECO SSCE examinations, I also strongly recommend that all Year 10 and Year 11 students get a copy each of this book, as its contents will bring about a timely exposé of the topics to them, as well as help them have adequate preparations for their respective examinations - termly, promotional and eventually, the SSCE (WAEC and NECO).

Teachers: Nation-builders and Destiny-shapers!

According to Henry Adams, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops".

Teachers:
- shape minds
- inspire future
- transform communities
- form and transform destinies

Our selfless services, dedication and passion for education deserve adequate recognition in terms of awards, incentives, motivations, better salaries, . . .

Paying qualified, competent, intelligent, positive result-oriented and experienced teachers meagre salaries in this present-day frowning economy will not only kill our morale, but will also affect our maximum output, as well as eventually destroy the system of education and global workforce, as half-baked (or no-baked) products would be delivered to the world.

We, therefore, urge proprietors, proprietresses, heads of school, etc. to save the nation's educational system from total collapse by paying us commensurate salaries that can take care of our needs as we celebrate another World Teachers' Day.

Happy World Teachers' Day!!!

Are you as smart as a 6-year-old child?

There are 4 questions; don't miss one.

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Stop and think about it and decide on your answer before you scroll down.

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say, open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?

Wrong Answer.

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions..

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals
attend .... except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory ... Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and
you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively proves the theory that most professionals do not have the brain of a 4-year-old child.
