Halloween in on it's way and although it's a really fun time for a lot of us humans, it can be a really scary time for our dogs.
We humans get to choose how and when to be scared during this season, but our dogs often don't get a say.
Here is a really great resource from Fear Free Pets that is will worth the read!
Even before I became a trainer, long before I even knew what Fear Free Pets was, and before Covid make "trunk & treat" a thing, I had a dog named Odie.
Odie loved being with his people, but as a beagle x pug, he did NOT love people knocking on his door, or wearing strange looking clothing (like costumes).
So, when we lived in Quebec, I would leave him inside where it was quiet and calm, and I would open up my hatch in our driveway. I'd play spooky scary music in the car, dress up in my own costume, and hand out the treats right from my trunk! It was fun for me, fun for the trick-or-treaters, and a lot more relaxing for my Puggle Pup who didn't see or hear a thing!
I know we want out pets to join us on all of the human fun we can have, but I think it's important to consider if it will actually be fun for them... because if you look at a lot of the things we do with our pets from their point of view, they probably aren't having nearly as much fun as we are!
