📚 New Year, New Learning Opportunities!

As the Christmas season begins and the year starts to wind down, I’ve been reflecting on what I see most often as a tutor — especially with Grade 9 math students.

Many students struggle, not because they aren’t capable, but because they’re facing a lot of change all at once. For students coming from French Immersion, the switch to English math brings new terminology and explanations that can make math feel harder than it really is.

There’s also the transition from level-based grading to percentages, which can reveal gaps that weren’t obvious before and sometimes affect confidence. On top of that, moving from Grade 8 to Grade 9 means a new school, new routines, and more expectations — it’s a big adjustment.

Add in the fact that math becomes more abstract, and any gaps in foundational skills like fractions or equations tend to show up quickly.

My goal as a tutor is to help students rebuild confidence and strengthen those foundations so they feel capable and prepared — not just for Grade 9, but for everything that comes after. When confidence grows, attitudes toward math start to shift in a really positive way.
